Hello all. I would very much appreciate help with this ID. The tern with about 40 common terns. The beak suggests common tern to me but the black head and neck is not consistent. The head coloring suggests a Bonapart's Gull to me but the beak is not right. There was one Bonaparte's Gull there, Couple Herring Gulls, and about 15 Ring Billed Gulls too.

Shot Aug 14. Cropped way down to best show the bird. Location - Northern Lake Huron MI near Canada border. Near Drummond Island, MI USA and St Joe Island, Ontario.

I hate to ask but would love help. Thanks in advance.

Sorry -- just can't get a good enough idea based on this image.

Thanks. Yes. The tern is one of many so the picture was really blown up to just show the one in question. Looks like there is a weed in front of it too. The only thing I thought is maybe there are two birds there but it does not look like it.

I love these challenges and usually can "call" a bird with a picture but I've looked at every gull and tern in my Eastern field guide and nothing seems right.

Keep 'em flying,
Greg B

I would say Common Tern judging by bill(dark tip) and leg coloration. The black cap is consistent with the Common. Also the primary flight feathers appear very dark beyond the edges. The Arctic Tern would look very similar in a shot like this but the dark bill tip makes me think Common Tern.
