I have a 40d that I have not used in about 6 months. I have a 7d now and I love it. The problem I’m having is with my 40d. I charged the batters, everything seemed to word fine. I pushed the button to take a picture and the shutter gets stuck! It will not release unless I turn the camera off and take out the battery. I mean everything else works it focuses, and everything. I even updated the software and nothing. WHAT IS GOIN ON? CAN ANYONE HELP ME? I’m glad I have my 7d:o

If you press the shutter again will it complete the cycle? If so, you probably have mirror lock up turned on.

So, if you press the shutter a second time, it will not activate the shutter? In that case, you may have a problem. Just to be sure, make sure your mirror lock up feature is turned off.

OK IT WORKS ....You won’t believe what happened. I was getting frustrated sitting on the edge of my couch with the camera on and no lens. The camera slipped out of my hand and fell to the carpeted floor, only about a foot if that. It fell on the edge of the camera. When I clicked the shutter it fired away. It’s working like new. I guess there’s something to say about a good beating. :0

I guess that's a lesson to drop your camera on the floor every 6months when not in use to keep the shutter working.

You discovered the art of "fine tuning". A big hammer works well also.

I'm just glad it's working and it COST NOTHING to fix. I'm going to open a camera shop :-)

This happens with my 40D too. It's a low power issue. It happens with my 24-105 with the IS on. Took me a while to figure out. :) If you plan on using the 40D still just buy some new batteries and you'll be good to go.
