A friend of mine started offering photographs to the riders on Palomar Mountain and I decided to help out by shooting some of my own.

Good shots. I like the lower angle in the first ones.

Thnx guys. Several riders liked their shots compared to the usual results provided by the regular photog.

I used to like to ride up there, but there's just too many bikes on a nice weekend now.

And from what I hear, the locals aren't too friendly, either.

I think I would lower the in-camera contrast setting (at least one notch, maybe two) in whatever parameter you're using to pick up more detail in the dark/shadowy areas of the riders/bikes.

Regards,
Jeff

So true, a lotta bikes & a lotta locals mean-mugging all the time. I'll have to capture them in a shot next time.

Thanks for your input. I don't touch any of the in-camera contrast settings but in post I definitely added some. I prefer the pop that the added contrast gives versus the detail in the shadows.

Good shots. Though they are a bit too contrasty and dark for me.

Rick Clemson?

He doesn't pan, but he uses fill flash to get some detail on the bike/engine. I like his work.

I posted one of his shots here:

It's much easier to set a parameter in camera than to have to deal with in post processing and you could still add some contrast later if you felt it was necessary. I think you'll find the pictures will still 'pop', but you will have more even exposure. I have enclosed a link to a typical shot where I used to struggle with both white and black uniforms, bright sun and lit from the side. IMHO, it still 'pops' but very little detail is lost in the white, black, or shadowy areas.

Good luck with your venture.

That is one of his better shots, 90% of what he puts up on his site is suspect and at $80 per print, he needs some competition to better himself. My friend is shooting right next to him in palomar as I type this.

Do you have a sample of your friend's work? Does he have a website?

I was the guy with white STi Shooting the other day... Rick will never change his style. After the two years I have been shooting up there, he hasn't adjusted anything beside the fact that he switches his turns up more. When I first started shooting on that turn you were on, I heard it through the grape vine that he was calling it the beginners corner and what not. but now, its pretty much the main corner he sits on.

Next time I'll walk down and say Hi to you guys.

Yeah my friends site is called intheturn.com and he is mainly aiming for motorbikes.

Yeah I remember you, I think you almost ran me over, lol. I've seen your work, I told my friend you were going to be his greatest challenge. I doubt I'll be out there again but my friend Travis will be shooting almost every weekend.
