Hi there everyone, just registered, and this is my first post, but i check potn for some time now.

I'm in need of some expert help :)
I know you've been bombarded by this type of question for some time now, but i need some help to burn some money :P

So, here it goes, I'm thinking on buying a camera, and until now I was able to narrow it down to 2 cameras, 7d and 5d markII(because of video, construction quality,features,etc). I'm having some trouble deciding between the two, and this is why;
For starters, budget. Thinking on getting the 7d with lame good glass, L series type, but I don't what to commit to EF-s lenses, EF only so I can go full frame in the future, maybe a 24-70mm (Canon or Sigma). Second option 5d MarkII and 50mm prime (F1.4 Canon or Sigma).
What I'l be shooting is portrait, family photos, street photography, low light, maybe macro and landscape.
By this last description I think most people would point to the 5d, but my problem is, investing in a 2+ years old camera is a good move? Would´t it be better to go to a much newer camera? The 5d mark III should be out next year. Another issue with the 5d is the AF problems that I've been reading, is it that bad? But image quality is also really important to me, and I know there's nothing like FF.

Grinding my brain with this for some time now :P

Just one other thing, lenses now. Canon 24-70mm L, the brick, still good to be buying now, or should wait for newer version? And the new Sigma 24-70mm, is it comparable to the brick in terms of image quality? It's much smaller, major plus.

Thanks,

David.

What you are wanting to shoot honestly is to broad a category to really help you. Pick a camera, either will work fine. You are going to start on a journey, it will be your personal story, you will figure it out on the way... we really can't help you until you have more specifics.

5DII vs 7D poll already in progress.... :)

I would personally consider the 7D and the 5D classic together as a great set, giving you two great tools for whatever you might shoot, and about the same price overall. The 5D classic is still a class contender for FF, don't you worry about the age of it. ;)

Since budget is an issue, 7D + some outstanding glass shoould do the work.

I agree ... budget is an issue? Go with the 7D!

Stick with EF L lenses and save up for a 5DMKII and you'll have the lenses already. If you can keep the 7D and get the 5DMKII at some time, you'll have the best of FF & Crop!

Video quality & construction of both are very good, don't worry about those things.

If you buy the 7D theres NO point ignoring EF-S lenses.

The 17-55 rocks, the 15-85 is ace and you will need something like a 10-22 if you want to shoot wide (unless you buy a 12-24 sigma or 14L or something).

You can always sell them on later and recoup most of the cost.

Ignoring EF-S lenses with an ef-s camera is daft.

agreed. I am afraid the OP has been reading too much on the internet, as the 5d2's center point is more than up to the task. Even if a 5d3 came out next year, are you planning NOT to buy a camera until then? There's going to another new camera announced after that one - should you wait even longer?

If you want a camera that can take pictures today, you need a camera made today. You also need a lens that is made today to put on it, not a lens that has been speculated about for years.

if you are tight on budget, look into the 7d or 5d classic. For the subjects you mentioned the original 5d, 5d2, and 7d would be up to the task.

I thought poll was going to be about the debate. Not another one. But good luck. They both rock.
