There are a ton of great freeware photo programs out there. Can we try to compile a listing of them here?

I am not opposed to trial period freeware or other such, just lets be clear in the discription just how free it is.....

O-kay I'll start with not only the best Freeware RAW converter/app,.. but my favorite RAW Converter at any price!

**EDIT** Alas, Raw Shooter Essentials is no more.

It also happens that the very best sharpening plug in for PSCS is not only currently a free set of scripts available for download.. but they are written by a member and regular contributor to this Forum!!!!

Get them here;
TLR Professional Sharpening Toolkit (external link)

Read more about them From the author GMitchell right here on the forum;

"virtualPhotographer is a Photoshop compatible plug-in that allows you to create a variety of photographic styles with the greatest of ease.
virtualPhotographer features many presets, all of which can be fine tuned to fit your requirements.
Effects such as Film Grain, Soft Focus, B/W, B/W tinting, High Contrast etc. are all just a click away. No more struggling to get to grips with the steep learning curve of your photo editor. Great results are just a mouse click away."

I had been looking for a way to achieve different effects and toning of images easily and these effects do the job nicely. It's easy to spend an evening trying out the variety of different effects.

chris, you beat me to the punch. I had thought about starting a free software thread about a week ago and little did I realize you had gotten the sticky up by the time I finally did post. Also good to see another Pentax owner here. Still have my 25 something year old Spotmatics and they still work. Also picked up the Canon adapter for the old Takumars.

Megapixels and high ISO are a digital photographers heroin. Once you have a little, you just want more and more. It doesn't stop until your bank account is run dry.

For cropping JPG files without recompression on save, I find that

JPEGCrops (external link)

works really well for me.

IrfanView rocks.

My latest discovery with this program is lossless rotations. So when programs don't recognize that the JPG should be in portrait mode you can use IV to quickly rotate them 90 degrees. Quick batch mode job and you're done.

You can take my 100-400 L away when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

A nice image viewer (besides to IrfanView) is FastStone (http://www.faststone.org). Can convert from raw too and offers a whole bunch of features that are actually useful.

Without doubt (at least for me!), the ultimate cataloguing program is Picassa 2. I bought Adobe Photo Album when it first came out. I simply don't use it. Picassa 2 is amazing. Google is the cat's meow for offering it to the masses.
