For digital neophytes who just want to publish pics to a web page, this is a (very basic) fast and easy-to-use program:

Web Photo Publisher 0.4
http://www.download-by.net …,web-photo-publisher.html (external link)

Give it an input folder, you can create an output folder on the fly. It creates your index page, thumbs gallery and comments/titles. Your jpegs are put on html files so you can scroll through them backwards and forwards.

Then you need some web space and an FTP program... :p

Thanks for the link. I think it is a very nice easy to use basic program.

I see that Picasa and Autostitch are already covered, so let me suggest something a little different. World Wide Media eXchange at http://www.wwmx.org (external link). It isn't one specific application but a collection of a few that are specifically for adding and viewing GPS data in your JPEGs. The most important of which are the "Track Downloader" to download tracks from your GPS and the "Location Stamper" that correlates the GPS data with your photo timestamps and stamps the photos with the lat/lon/alt of the location.

I carry a GPS with me whenever I take photos just for this purpose. Think about it... using Google Maps to view your vacation photos.

I'm working on a viewer, check out an early sample at the bottom of this page http://okuda.blogspot.com …traboulay-poco-trail.html (external link). Here is an older attempt using the wwmx.org web tool and a bunch of hacking to put it in my blog http://okuda.blogspot.com …day-4-in-new-zealand.html (external link). I like the Google Maps version better.

Not a pleasant name for a piece of software, but "The Rasterbator is a web service which creates huge, rasterized images from any picture. The rasterized images can be printed and assembled into extremely cool looking posters up to 20 meters in size." You can also download an offline version, see the link below:

http://homokaasu.org/rasterbator/ (external link)

not a serious bit of software, but quite fun and easy to use all the same :))

Not exactly imaging related, but more of a file management helper for Windows. How many times have you tried to delete or rename a file or folder only to be stymied by THIS:

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: NOT FOUND | MIME changed to 'text/html'

Or any of it's cousins:
Cannot delete file: Access is denied
There has been a sharing violation.
The source or destination file may be in use.
The file is in use by another program or user.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

If any of those look familiar, then you need Unlocker (external link).

Unlocker (external link) loads into the context menu. Just right click on the offending file or program, and select unlocker. It will kill all processes that are referencing the file or folder so you then can delete or rename.

I wish I had found this years ago.

Rad, that just made me jump with joy. Never struck me to search for such a program!! You made my day and ended up making me spend the last 2 hours cleaning up so many 'dead ends'!!

Excellent thread! I've found a lot of useful tools here. :)

I'm hooked on the demo version of Neat Image (external link), and will probably buy it in the future. It's a noise reduction program that is invaluable for cleaning up a photo after sharpening. Unfortunately the demo can't be used for commercial purposes, but it's great for home projects.

I use this program as my Proof review program with clients after a shoot.
web site at: http://www.hamrick.com/ (external link)
Allows you to scroll thru photos by hitting the spacebar &/or zBackspace button.
It does a lot more but I use it just for the easy of previewing photos

Not all of the previous suggestions have been for image manipulation, so let me throw in my .02 for jAlbum (jalbum.net) for web publishing. I don't want to get into everything it does, just that it does it all and keeps getting better. And it is free. And it is available for windows, mac and linux. And it has an active user forum.
