Ok after having read all the praises for the "holy Grail" of lenses, the 70-200mm F2.8 Mk II IS (smack yo momma lens)... I really want to save and purchase it. But, I wonder if there is another lens out there, with the same IQ, and unsung praises, that will give me the same focal range eqiuvalent of the 70-200, but on the cropped body of the 7d. And at a slightly better price range?

The closest you'll find might be the Tokina 50-135 f2.8 or Sigma 50-150 f2.8

If you want the 70-200 range like you would on a full frame, you would need a zoom from 44-125mm on a crop. Your best option would be the sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 II if you want something comparable. Cost for this lens is around $750 new. So it is cheaper.

That is about your best option.

Thanks..Either of you had experience with the sigma 50-150mm f2.8 II? Overall grade in performance?

I think the 70-200 would be better option... The non-is f/4 version which you could find for about 550 or so. The IQ on those lenses kill the 50-150.

Any reason you do not want the 70-200? What are you shooting? Usually people want more range, not less!

But he's looking for something in the 44-125mm range, not a 70-200.

The 600mm f/4 IS kills the 50-150mm too ;)

Did you mean to write "Usually people want more length, not less!" ?

I shot with the Pentax 50-135mm f/2.8 when I was with Pentax, and I loved the "range".

While I love my 70-200, I liked how the Pentax started out a bit wider.

Sounds like the OP has a specific reason(s) for wanting a "crop equivalent" to a FF 70-200, so the 50-150/50-135 sound like reasonable suggestions. AND they are both f/2.8 compared to f/4 on the Canon 70-200 f/4. So he gets a more useable range (for him) and a faster lens.

I have just used 70-200 2.8 IS MkII on 7D and love the combo. If I am not wrong this combo would be better than 5D2+70-200 f4 IS.

@ invertalon - I am looking to match the focal range of a lens on a crop body with the focal range of a full frame with the 70-200mm f2.8.

And as egordon99 said, I am looking for the speed and quality of the 70 - 200 mm 2.8 but on a true focal range equivalent lens made for crop bodies.

@tancanon58 - how do you like it on the 7d? any drawbacks yet? and pics to show me. I am curious because I have yet to see any images on here from anyone with the 7d/ 70-200 2.8 is Mk II combo...

I shoot mainly portraits in studio, but I'd like some versatility when i go outside....

Also, if anyone knows anyone with the 7d/ sigma 50-150 f2.8 II combo... I'd like their input too...

I enjoy using my 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens in tandem with a 70-200mm f/4L IS on a pair of 1.6x bodies. I can carry the 70-200mm f/4L IS AND THE EXTRA BODY; at the same weight as the 70-200mm f/2.8 alone! I generally don't miss the 55-70mm range between my two zooms.

This is my standard general and travel photography kit. I can shoot 90-95% of the images I need with these two lenses. Including a 1.4x TC in my kit, raises this to about 93 or so percent. Where I would lack in this two lens set is in macro capability and long focal length wildlife and sports. However, the 70-200mm f/4L IS with a 1.4x TC will fill the long focal length needs to some degree. I could not use a 50-150mm lens for the same purposes.

Regarding my 70-200mm f/4L IS lens: I can shoot this at 1/60 second with full expectations of 100% sharp imagery. When I use 1/30 second, I don't get 100% sharp imagery but, my keeper rate is quite respectable. This would equate quite well with shooting the 50-150mm lens without IS at f/2.8. BTW: The 70-200mm f/4L IS weighs in at exactlythe same weight 760g as the 50-2150mm Sigma f/2.8.

I have to say i used the 70-200 2.8 IS II on a 7D today at B&H and i was blown away! I loved the images out of the 70-200 4 IS. However, the 2.8 IS II is a worthy upgrade. I carry a 7D with 24-70 attached to it all day without a problem. I dont see an issue carrying the 70-200 2.8 IS II either. So if wieght is an issue go 4 IS but if not i would go 2.8 IS II.
