I've seen LCD protectors for my T1i from anywhere between $2.45 up towards $20. What is the difference? Which is a good buy?

NONE of them.

Your camera already has a superb LCD protector on it - the one that Canon put on your camera. If you somehow manage to damage it, you can get a replacement cover and a new adhesive strip for attaching it.

Cost is something like $20 US for the parts.

A suction cup is recommended as a tool to pull the old cover off.

You don't need a "protector" for the camera's protector.

I have the GGS protector on my T1i. Its glass and doesn't leave air bubbles. I bought it off Amazon for ~$10. I like the protection from the buttons on my shirts.

Cheap one is plastic, the other one is glass. Get the glass one! I have this one for my T1i. What a difference it makes in keeping the LCD from being damaged and also very easy to clean off the nose marks. I just breath on the glass and use my t-shirt to wipe it clean. This one fits the T1i's LCD screen perfectly.

The perimeter of the glass protector sticks on sort of like with double stick tape, just remove paper tape, line it up and stick it on the border around the LCD. It stays put! I paid around $10 at the time at Amazon but you might find this one costing less elsewhere than Amazon. Google for price comparison.

Thanks everyone. The reason I ask is because scratches on the rear LCD bother me. I just got a T1i in as a backup to my 50D. My 50D has a couple scratches on the rear LCD so I bought a new replacement cover for about $25. But I have not been able to remove the LCD screen thus far, and am afraid of damaging the camera by continuing to try.

While I'm here, can anybody give any tips for DIY repair of the LCD on my 50D? I already have the replacement LCD screen and double-sided tape (about $25).

use a big suction cup to pull it out. like what skip said what you see in your camera now is a protector...so why would you want to add a protector to a protector.

Good news and bad news---
I was able to remove the scratched LCD cover with a very cheap suction cup I bought from Pat Catan's craft store. I've heard the 50D has a stronger adhesive than many previous xxD Canon DSLRs but with a bit of work and a credit card I was able to remove it. I thought I was home-free but screwed up applying the double-sided tape and now have to buy more tape before I can retry this final step. I wanted to first put the double-sided tape on the replacement LCD cover and then peel off the rest and attach it to the camera, but a site online recommended to do the reverse and I bumped into trouble that would have been avoided doing it my way. Shoot! Oh well, live and learn!

I have this on my 7D. It's amazing. I had the more expensive $35 Giottos Aegis screen protector with 12x coating on my T1i. Guess what happened to it? Looks like someone stabbed it or something, or maybe I kicked it on my trip to Vegas but it looks like a point impact where it shattered. I ran with a giant crack down the middle for 2 months until today. I took it off finally. Pissed me off that I spent $35 when the plastic LCD cover is $20. Heh. I was always worried the crack would split and I'd cut my nose on it, but the adhesive is very sticky. Unfortunately glass shards or dust started getting in between the crack and it looked like a line of dirt on the crack so I finally removed it.

I do love it because it did decrease nose grease and oil is less visible. Furthermore, glare reduction is nice. I noticed the plastic cover is a smudgefest now that I'm going bare again. I do love my GGS protector on my 7D. It's not as nice, but for $10 or so, at least if I break it it's not gonna cost more than the plastic cover itself.

Word of advice: Don't bother with the plastic protectors. They suck. They get scratched. I've used Invisible Shield or similar types on my iPhone, iPod, N-Series, DROID, and it's all scratched. It's more like I use them now because if you scratch up Gorilla Glass (unlikely), it's gonna be a PITA to replace unlike Canon's stuff plastic LCD cover. But if you cover your LCD screen of your camera with a cheapo plastic one, then you'll just get a scratched up surface still. Might as well go glass. Giottos uses Schott class which is extremely strong. How it broke is still annoying me though. Yuck.
