Here's a quick and dirty comparison of two aftermarket tripod rings for people like me who don't like to spend a fortune on the original Canon A(W) version. I have the 70-200mm F4 IS.

The brands I'm comparing are JJC and Phottix, both bought off eBay.

Photos of the JJC brand tripod rings:

This is made of PLASTIC though the description of the seller states it is made of aluminum. The only aluminum parts are the knob, hinge, and tripod socket. The rest is made of plastic.

Here's the Phottix brand:

I'm pretty sure this one's metal. It doesn't flex and is about 60g heavier than the JJC brand.

The Phottix ring on the 70-200 F4IS

The color is slightly off, but only obvious on the photo.

I hope this helps someone looking for alternatives to the original :)

An earlier thread, with photos of the various alternatives (in post #16) and someone's comment (message #7)about knurled vs. ribbed knobs, indicating which one to get ...

Thanks Wilt. Maybe the mods can move this to the lens section.

Thanks for the photos. Is the JJC plastic strong enough? I just ordered a JJC online.
