I own the kit and have used the sigma, it is way better than the kit lens. Go for the sigma!

The Sigma is going to be superior, but the Canon is going to be much less expensive. Try both and determine if the extra cost is worth it to you?

The Sigma costs about $70 more than the kit lens. I think that's worth it for a smaller aperture and USM.

I think you are talking about the 18-50mm f2.8 or do you mean the the 18-50mm f2.8-4.5 is also superior?

I have not seen that many reviews of the 18-50mm F2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM. The few I have seen have said it is a pretty good lens, but I don't really know if it is any sharper than the 18-55 IS. It has HSM but it is not "Ring type" HSM with Full Time Manual focus.

It is only $200 at B&H http://www.bhphotovideo.com …50mm_f_2_8_4_5_DC_OS.html (external link)

Considering that a new 18-55 IS at B&H is $170 http://www.bhphotovideo.com …18_55mm_f_3_5_5_6_IS.html (external link)

I think I would go with the Sigma for the non-rotating front element and faster aperture.

Perhaps someone can chime in on the dead thread, I've always the same thoughts as well.
