I bought a 58mm uv filter off amazon uk the item was fulfilled by amazon but sold by another seller. The picture shows the filter as made in japan but when mine arrived it says its made in usa some of the reviews of the filter say that these are counterfeit is this true? i only payed £7 but if it is counterfeit it shouldn't be getting sold on a site like amazon.

Canon filters are reputedly made by Tiffen, which is a US company, and are pretty bad. I'd send it back and buy a reliable brand- Hoya S-HMC or HD, B+W MRC or Heliopan SH-PMC. Buying something inexpensive in photography generally doesn't mean that you saved money; it means you got a cheap and junky product. Sad but true.

Thanks for the quick reply i have only bought it to use as a cheap lens protector or is this not even good enough to do that?

Only if you take it off to take pictures. I use UV filters for protection against small flying objects and moist stuff flying around, but if it's going to be in front of your lens it needs to be as good quality as possible so it doesn't distort the image, markedly reduce the light getting through (uncoated filters will reduce the light passing through by up to 7%; good multicoats by less than 1%) and likely cause bad flaring and loss of contrast (also due to the filters being uncoated or single coated).

Ditch the Canon before you are tempted to take photos through it. Get a B+W or Heliopan. Much more money, but well worth it.
