Canon just got awarded a patent for basically wifi controlled flashes. Not sure what to think about it but it seems like it might be a good idea.

Very busy link to patent(may be temp blocked, took me 5 tries to get through)....

Do you think they will make it? Or is this just a move to keep others (Nikon) from using it.

An imaging apparatus for performing wireless communication with a flash device, including a generation unit configured to generate a plurality of emitting instructions which include timing information indicating a timing for emitting the flash device, wherein each emitting instruction includes different timing information, and a transmission unit configured to successively transmit the plurality of emitting instructions to the flash device, wherein the transmission unit transmits each emitting instruction in succession based on the timing information.

What a nicely constructed sentence. Short and simplified, that's the way I like 'em!

Lol. Nikon will never be able to copy that! Who the hell can make a device that does that? Better yet, a big round of applause to the engineer who can understand that and actually make a device out of whole idea.

I can understand it. Just can't do anything with it, design-wise.

If you mean you can plot a flow chart with that sentence, so can I. But it's not the simplest way to say "I will make a device kind of like PW mini/flex with TTL capabilities built into the flash" is it?

I was doing a family shoot at a client's house with my Cactus triggers and the client (an Electronics Engineer) asked if I was using Bluetooth to trigger the flash :)

Saying that they are wi-fi is misleading. It uses wireless control but NOT the same as your laptop/phone/computer.

This is so obvious, I find it disturbing that the USPTO actually issued it :-P
It'll probably be struck down on prior art grounds...hopefully...

Lol, true....but actually that's how patents are written. It's the lawyers job to write the claim as broad as possible without being vague. That way no one else can take the invention and just make a minor tweak thus changing the device and getting a new patent.

If the 580 ex II is Near 400$ now, imagine what a hopped up wifi controlled unit will cost.
Now I like my speedlights, they do what thecae designed to do well. Were my ability to use them right up to the edge of there designed functions, they would even work better for me.
I shoot mostly in manual mode. I guess I should learn how to use all the ettl hooey if there gona make them wifi. Sheeze something else to run my batteries down.
