OK, I'm ready to dive in. Anyone know if the S95 is actually available anywhere yet? I've pre-ordered on Amazon, but would love to get one ASAP.

This may be the replacement for my trusty SD880 that I use when I don't want to lug my 40D DSLR. I've had two Canon digital Elphs since 2004 and have really started to appricate any manual control I can do after I began shooting with a 20D back in Nov.

This 95s seems to add the ability for more creative control along with manual knobs to turn.....

i'm looking at adding a p&s to compliment my 7D and was looking at the s95 or the sd4500. we have a hdd camcorder that we NEVER so one main function I am looking to get from these is the video (more casual stuff than anything).

i've compared the specs on both of these and am confused on one point that I was hoping someone could answer for me.

I saw on canons description for the 4500 that it has 10x optical but the optical zoom is not functional in shooting video.....so does that mean you cant zoom at all while shooting video?? or does it make you use digital zoom (hopefully not)...that would take the 10x optical appeal out the window in my opinion.

if so does that mean you cant optically zoom (i believe its 3.8x ) on the s95 either in movie mode?

thanks in advance

not sure about S95, but about SD4500 in past SD P&S only allowed digital zoom in video.

S95 is a better camera because or brighter lens and bigger sensor.

and it will be better match for the 7D, I bet in some cases you will use S95 over 7D

thanks for the reply. honestly i was leaning towards the 95 too. the 10x optical zoom keeps me pulled towards the 4500 though (and $50 cheaper). and honestly the video mode is the biggest factor for us with this one since we just wanted it for a quick way to get impromptu video's of our small kids . i've always tried to avoid digital zoom like the plauge but do you know how far it gives you on these models? kinda makes the movie mode useless if you cant zoom , doenst it

I wouldn't worry too much about not having optical zoom. The camera has to "de-res" video to get from the 10 MP sensor to the 720 x 1280 or 1280x1920 HD images. So there's plenty of room for digital zoom without getting a poor image. What you can't do with digital zoom is zoom out from where you started, but by starting early and wider than your opening shot needs, you can zoom in, then out (to where you started) safely and digitally.

The S95 also has a wider lens, if that matters. 28mm vs. 36mm on the SD4500.

I don't think it works that way. I have SD990 and its 14mp, when recording video and I use digital zoom I can clearly see the video pixalating, and quality going down.

Depends on the speed you zoom at . . . but rapid zooms tend to get your audience queasy anyhow.
