This is just the first of the new Nikon and Canon DSLRs announced for the second half of this year. More will come with new shiny add-ons.

I dont think I would call that 'right". But it is a way better option than anything that Canon offers.

nikon had their GPS unit for while.

and its cheap

also don't forget P6000 with build in GPS

with Canon you have to buy that stupid wireless grip that cost about 500-700 bucks then USB Bluetooth adater and then GPS unit.

Why not use a GPS module? Sony made one which records where you were then you insert your card once you have finished shooting and it pairs the time/date with where it was location wise.

Nice feature but as mentioned, just a shiny add on

If you have to have the GPS location it is a nice add-on. Personally, I have no need at all for a GPS location.

As for the tone (name calling) in your post, you appear to be a troll. I am glad that you like your Nikon and hope that you are glad that I like my Canon. Just because I drive a Dodge truck I don't go to other truck sites to say that their truck is "Jack Squat". Maybe I outgrew such tactics when I left grade school.

Since I use multiple cameras, including using a P&S as a digital notebook, I find the idea of hanging a GPS off every camera cumbersome and expensive. I just carry a stand-alone GPS around with me and let Downloader Pro add the geotags to the photos from all my cameras as I download. No muss, no fuss and the GPS also functions as a navigation tool.

ah, I was just stating that based on the fact you posted a pic of the D3100. You may get better options in the new Canon's that are released.

I guess I'm too old fashioned to care for a GPS on my camera.

Sure, I use GPS when backpacking but I just do not know why I want it affixed to my camera. I know where I went to get the shots, why would I want to tell everyone else in the world? That's like giving up my best fishing hole and I'll be damned if that is going to happen! :)

Yea I def wouldnt call that "Right", the last thing I want is ANOTHER dang thing hanging off my camera. RIGHT would be internal GPS with perhaps a tiny antenna if needed. I think: My iphone has a tiny one built in and it works great, so why cant my camera?

Garmin eTrex Vista HCx (external link) is one I use. Even picks up a fix from in a building if you're not too far from the walls/roof. 24 hr. on 2xAA cells and I can load my choice of base maps on it. Downloader Pro (external link) from Breeze Systems.

if i understand this correctly, the garmin keeps some type of location log in format, that the downloader pro reads? time codes have to be synced for this to work, right?

Automatic geo-tagging of images as they are downloaded by reading GPS data from devices such as the Sony GPS-CS1 tracker and storing latitude and longitude positional information in the shooting data of the image. Supports track logs from a wide range of GPS devices using the two main GPS track log standards: GPX and NMEA

can this be done with tomtom on windows mobile phone?

Correct, although you can sync time by photographing the clock display on the GPS and using that to enter a time offset in Downloader Pro. For that matter, I've post-adjusted a camera offset by comparing the track data with a known photo location. If you're on foot, a minute or so won't matter much. If you're photographing from an aircraft (especially a jet), seconds matter though. I've used the GPS track log projection and a photo taken on departure to determine the right offset for photos.

If the TomTom can record a track (doesn't have to be GPX or NMEA; there are conversion routines to get from other formats into one of those), and the battery life's good enough for you, then yes it would. Problem with using a smartphone is that the GPS receivers aren't all that strong but they're heavy drains on your phone's battery.
