Geotagging from Canon is very expensive and cumbersome.
Geotagging from Nikon is not ridiculously expensive (although the GPS unit was $200 last time I checked which is expensive considering it has no screen, no navigation, and does nothing) but it is cumbersome as well. I read tons about it and the d90. The connector plug from the GPS is awkwardly positioned and sized. Many people have reported it to be "not great" in that department. The nikon also sits in the hotshoe so no flash, or I guess you could leave it dangling.
Considering the cost of a GPS chip, I am surprised more Canon/Nikon aren't doing any better. All they need is the chip and a separate on/off switch for the GPS (to avoid acquisition issues when you're ready to shoot). It's not that hard. I also use a handheld + downloader pro but it's another thing to remember/deal with and frankly the clocks never seem to stay in sync so I have to set them before shooting.
Geotagging is the one thing the 7d was missing when it was announced, I really thought Canon was going to leapfrog Nikon on the issue (and that's not saying much).
My $.02.
