I would like to use my I-Pad as a large composing/focusing screen. I am getting older and found Live View to be a valuable tool. Using the grid lines to aid composition, but mainly I use it as a focusing aid, moving the target from foreground to backround under magnification to check focus. The larger screen of my I-Pad would be ideal if I can figure out how to use it, anybody done it yet? Thanks

The best way is with DSLR remote. But you have to be tethered to a laptop. Then the laptop sends the info over wifi to the Iphone/pod/pad. This is not overly convienent at times. But it also gives you full control over the camera from the pad.

If you want to shoot and check after the shot there is Shuttersnitch. But you need a eye-fi card to use it.

There is yet no way to go direct from camera to pad.

Typically, you'd tether your camera to a conventional laptop using the EOS Utility. With the i-Pad... can't say.

See this:

So far that is all I can find, and wanted to eliminate the need for a computer between the camera and the I-Pad. Do not need to control the camera , though that would be nice, just want to see the image that is on the camera display also displayed on the I-Pad. Someone needs to write the app.

Problem with that is it probably requires some working knowledge of Canon hardware/firmware to pull it off. That means licensing through Canon and we all know how Canon loves to be open with their technology and design scheme. It would probably take a large company to do it or Canon themselves, which is to say, don't hold your breath.

Somewhere I read about these guys in Florida, shooting a Shuttle launch. The cameras were at/near the launch site and they were in a bar in town.

It seems to me the camera had the Wireless option and their iPad had the same. I'm talking cellular wireless. They made mention that others were doing it remotely but the others needed a LAPTOP at the launch site, and all they had was the Canon Camera and wireless.

I wonder if you had a router, the wireless option on the camera if you could not use a wireless equipped iPad to do what you want?

Those fellas did it at NASA.

ACTUAL INFORMATION IS HERE ----> http://scottaudette.com/?p=218 (external link)

Reuters shooter Scott Audette has posted a brief story highlighting the successful use of a Canon EOS 5D Mark II and an Internet-connected Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E4 II A to cover the launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis last month. The workflow included extracting pictures from afar as well as remote camera control testing using an Apple iPad.

I forgot about that way. But you have to buy a $700 wireless grip. That alone is a deal breaker. You can connect ad hock from the WTF unit to a computer with an HTML protocol I think. The WTF will generate an interface that can be controlled over a network.

There are a few problems with connecting directly from ipad to camera.

First, and the biggest problem to over come is Canon does not allow it in the SDK. OnOne has gotten this request to many times to count since the DSLR Remote came out.

Also until reciently Apple did not allow access to the connector for anything other than charging and audio/video out. They allow some access now, but it is limited from what I hear.

Yeah the wireless part is pricey ... but I see one in my near future.

As far as connector access ... what apple says they allow is what they will support ... what people find out they can do through experimentation is another story.

I see you are in Maryland .... what city/town?

But as soon as Apple finds out you are outside the rules they will pull it out of the asp store. Much like they did the Camera+ app.

Im in Frederick or Germantown depending on the time.
