I bought a couple of lenses from someone on PotN and found that three 58mm Canon UV lenses had been included. That's when it dawned on me--I don't think I've ever seen Canon UV filters mentioned here or for sale here. What is up with that? Am I just not looking hard enough or are they really that rare?

They're really that bad. Use 'em to protect your furniture from hot or cold drinks. That's what they're best at. They're reportedly made by Tiffen, and Tiffen doesn't have a great name for filters either.

Jon hit it on the head. Look into B+W filters
they are top of the line.

agree.

I think all the real feisty pro protective filter people are in bed already. Dont worry... tomorrow we'll hear all the warnings about sand, dirt, kids sticky fingers, rocks, marring, etc.

If you really want to protect your lens, just make sure you always use your lens hood.

so do you want something/anything to protect the lens surface or,or
do you really think a needs UV protection like some old emulsions?

I use hoods and caps to protect lens surfaces....and nothing to keep UV from a sensor.

Ah hah, I was about to say they're as bad as Tiffen filters... I honestly would not be surprised if they sourced to Tiffen.

It's interesting how Nikon is rumored to get their filters from Hoya's HMC line, whereas Canon has apparently opted to sully their name with cheap non-coated filters. Good going Canon.

Tiffen do makes some good filters as well. But their prices will be up there along with B+W, Hoya, etc.

Isn't Tiffen a big name in the film industry? I thought I read somewhere that a lot of hollywood filmmakers uses Tiffen exclusively.

Tiffen is big in the film industry mostly because there are no other options--apparently only they make some of the odd filters that are used.

As far as I know, there are no multi-coated Tiffen filters. Because of this, you really can't expect much.

I see. Tiffen filters never drew my attention as I've stuck with B+W and some times Hoya.

For rectangular filters though, I was tempted with their water white glass for Grad NDs. They cost more than singh ray at $200+ each. At the end, I decided to stick with Lees.
