I just bought a grip for my 5D because I have a little trouble keeping my portrait oriented shots completely vertical.

The first thing I noticed is that the joystick for focus point selection is so far away in portrait orientation, that I can't reach it.

I love the joystick so I'm pretty disappointed in the grip. At this point I think I may get rid of the grip and practice on my technique. What does everyone else do?

Just set C.Fn III: Autofocus/Drive AF point selection method to "0" or "2" then you can use the Quick Control dial to select the AF point. When vertical it's closer than the Multi controller.

In AV mode the Quick control dial controls the exposure compensation, the main dial on the grip controls the apeture, AF point selection using the quick control dial is toggled on by holding in the grip magnification button.

Yep. Pretty silly design error by Canon IMO: The joystick should have been placed in the center of the quick control dial.

They should have copied the Nikon MB-D10.

Ok, Thanks

I got out the camera and had a fiddle. Doesn't sit well ATM but I'm going to force myself to use this for a little while and see if I like it better than the multi controller.

I tried the dial to set the focus point when I first got the 5D, but didn't like it as it was slow compared to the joystick. Besides, I mostly shoot in manual and need it for aperture control.

I think I've already made up my mind, but I'll go ahead try to use the grip all weekend. Until they come out with the 5DIII with the joystick in a different position, or a joystick on the grip like Nikon, I'll probably end up grip-less.
