Here are two shots from an amateur soccer game; Read: crappy lighting.

Both were taken with a 1D Mk IV - ISO 25,600 - 400 mm - f/2.8.

Both of these images were cleaned up using Neat Image. But that was before I got Ps CS5 with ACR 6.0. ACR would have done just as good a job in the NR department IMO.

- Mike.

7D processed in LR3 with default settings + "15" luminance noise reduction, then in CS3 with smart sharpening at "60" with .1 radius. Full scene and 100% crop, both resized for posting.

If you resized the 100% crop for posting... doesn't that make it no longer 100% crop? ;)

Quite true, which is why I mentioned the resizing.

Here's the full scene shot with my P&S showing about how the light levels look to the eye.

Here's a "real" 100% crop, for the more discriminating viewers. ;) At 90 pixels to the inch, this is the equivalent of a 9.5 X 8.6 inch section of a 57.6 X 38.4 inch poster-sized image.

...and that purpose is strictly to increase the sensitivity of the sensor. What you do with that is entirely up to you, the photographer.

/Captain Obvious. No one is challenging any of that.

Whatever people want to set their camera at is up to them. There are no rules so long as you get the shot. That's it. It's that simple. Can you get the shot with other settings? Maybe, but who gives a damn. That doesn't matter here.

All I was trying to say was that, for me, and that my not suit all, is that I use the lowest ISO I can to get the shot I want every time. The basis being that quality drops as ISO rises. But each to their own.

Don't want a war over it, just saying, that's all.

The footy shots look great safecracker. I'll post a couple of my own later. 12k8 really does change what you can shoot at this level.

Working on some wall art for the theater room, I like the grainy look a bit, it seems a bit retro. Might be doing a twist from this shot, not sure yet. 7D ISO 12800...

Second picture is far from 'clean' and looks a lot worse than the first one. Id take grain-like noise over purple blotches any day of the week.

That purple is from my computer which is right next to her on the right of the photo. I still think it proves that ISO that high is somewhat usable, but really, when are you going to be at 51,200.

So for those shooting manual mode, how do you do this? Do you dial in settings that get you close to -2, then add +2 during raw processing? How can you tell that a manual mode shot followed this push methodology, there would be nothing in the exif to tell you that the exposure was under by 2, correct?...

Correct, you'd need to remember to get the exact numbers, but you'd also notice the dramatically dark underexposed image and could just push till it looked good. I tend to do that myself.

The only light in the room was a night light and a little ambient 'city light' coming in the window. I could barely see him in the viewfinder, I had to do manual focus and kind of guess. 1.8 1/9 of a second ISO 12,800, hand held.

7D, taken at ISO 12800 and unprocessed.

Neither were taken in a bright environment. I think people underestimate how well the sensor on the 7D can perform at high ISO... it's not all about the 5D2 ya know! ;)

^^^ wow that must be dark.

Try fitting the flashgun, turn off the flash firing and use the AF assist beam. Works well in this situation.
