tripod question

Last year I got a benbo trekker on permanent loan from a friend and this, I thought, was awesome. Now, a year later, I really don't like it. I know there are probably those of you out there that love it and that's great but I'm just not a fan. I find it rather unstable and lost a 3 month old XTi to a creek because it the tripod tipped. I just don't trust it. Here's the thing though, I do like the ball head. The other day as I was looking for new tripods and bummed that I couldn't afford a new tripod with a ball head I got the flash that, "hey, can't I just take this ball head off and put it on a new set of legs that I like?"

And therein is my question? I can right? Anyone want to suggest a good, sturdy set of legs that will work with the ball head I already have? I will be using it mainly for landscape work and I do a lot of water shots.

The thing I don't like about the trekker is just how easy those legs can swing and also after some time (and not overtightening the screws) I can't get a good lock on the legs so it has become unsteady.

Thanks

Yes, you should be able to take the head off of the old tripod. Do you know what head it is? For the sticks, I would look at the Manfrotto line. Very solid, stable, company with a long and good history. The only problem is that the tripods are heavy, at least the aluminum ones, but they will last a lifetime.

Others here can suggest models.

Yep, those heads all use a standard mounting stud.
Take the Benbo head, and put it on a set of legs you like.

As suggested, I'd take a look at Manfrotto, specifically the 055 and 190 series...they make each in CF and aluminum.

The Giottos CF series appear to have been well-received and good value too

Not perhaps as quick to operate as a Manfrotto but everything else seems to be there
