So I've got the Tamron 18-270 that I love and pretty much stays on my camera. I've also got the Sig 50. It is a great lens, I just don't use it much. My daughter is 4 and starting soccer in a couple of weeks. The 18-270 is good it just isn't quick enough. I was thinking about replacing what I have with a Sig 17-70 2.8 and the Canon 70-200 F4L IS. Any thoughts? Will it be that big of difference? Any other thoughts for a better combo for about the same price?

Thanks for the input
Joe

Here is another option. I am assuming you have ~1660 to work with.

B&H prices:
Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 - $459 (414 AR)
Sigma 100-300mm f/4 - $1099

total: 1513

I think you will enjoy the extra reach on the Sigma for soccer. Being able to get tight crops in camera will help with focusing and will generally look nicer imo. I have one that I've used for sports and I enjoyed it a lot; focus is fast and accurate and the lens is sharp. The tamron is probably a nicer lens too although I'll admit I haven't used the 17-70 or the 17-50.

So you think the Sig 100-300 will perform as well as the Canon 70-200 F4?

Or should I try and scrape up the cash for the 70-200 F2.8L? How big is the difference between the two?

For telephoto, F4 is not much faster than f5.6. For no flash situation, you probably need to go with a prime and then crop in as needed. Something like 85mm f/1.8 or 100mm f/2. With those extra 2 stops, you will be able to shoot indoor with high ISO.

OP already has a 430ex II so OP is covered there.

Also, are you looking for AF speed improvement? Then USM or HSM is definitely nice to have. So Sigma 17-70 would be an improvement over Tamron but Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 OS might be even better if you don't need the reach.

Still learning
Nikon D750, Sigma 24-105OS, 105mm 2.8g micro VR, Tamron 70-300VC

I like the idea of the 17-50 but what about the differences between the 70-200 f4l and the 2.8l. For the average shooter is the 2.8 worth it? Can the F4 handle soccer matches?

Considering the size of a soccer field and the lighting conditions (daytime) you will be fine with f/4 outdoors and the extra reach of the 100-300 will be helpful. I've only used 70-200/2.8, 70-200/2.8IS I, and 300 f/4L non-IS so I can't really tell you how it will perform compared to the 70-200/4L but I ended up with the Sigma after using all of the above if that gives you any indication.

Here are some samples from my 100-300.

in your guys' opinion how useful is IS... i was really thinking of the sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4 but its not IS :/
