Focus speed & accuracy: 20D vs. 7D

I have a 20D and don't see it dying for some time to come. The one thing I'm constantly frustrated by with it though it the autofocus accuracy. I find that I like to shoot moving targets like cars racing and caterpillars on the move and with these moving targets the camera hunts quite a bit. Less so with the race cars, but prohibitively so with moving targets with the macro.

Does anyone have any comparisons between the 20D and the 7D to see if its gonna provide a worth while increase in accuracy? I'm particularly looking at the 7D 'cause I have 2 EFS lenses that I don't necessarily want to replace right now (and the EFS-60mm Macro is one that I'm looking to improve the focus accuracy with).

Yeah, I know this is a rather arbitrary question, but want to see if anyone has come from an older camera to a 7D and seen an uptick in autofocus reliability.

Well I never owned a 20D but the 7D has state of the art AF that is very adjustable to any style of shooting so if AF is your issue other than going with a a 1DIII or higher I doubt you will get more bang for your buck.

For macro shooting you also get live view, which is a good focusing tool in such cases.

never had a 20D, but the closest I can compare is the 30D I have. which is to say, night and day. Im pretty sure the 7D will blow the 20D out of the water. AF reliability has been spot on and compared to the bad 7D threads here, I would like to say I belong to the other group of good 7Ds.

I went from 20D to 7D. The 7D IMHO is simply awesome, the amount of keepers on moving objects shooting at 8fps is very high. In fact so high that it is a pain that you have so many to look through to see exactly which one is best!!

If you set your camera to AI this will show the remarkable speed that the 7D operates at when you compare it to the 20D.

Swing the camera around from a distant object to a close one. Immediately you discover the results of a few years development and dual processors.

The 7D AF speed blew my old XSi out of the water.

Night & day.......and that's a night without even a moon....lol

20D isn't even in the same world AF wise

I have and shoot both the 20D and 7D.

Couple things. Yes the AF is far superior on the 7D. That being said the 20D AF on the 20D should be more than capable with proper technique.

Live view makes a huge difference in macro photography but then you're not really talking focus speed anymore.

I think there's a noticeable difference in AF capability between the 40D and the 7D, just like I thought there was a difference between the 400D and the 40D. The 400D utilizes the same AF sensor module as the 30D does.

Millions, huh? Perhaps I should try singing...
