I am trying to use my Canon S3-IS with PSRemote to do some time lapse photography. However, when I connect the camera to the software, it will turn itself off after a couple of minutes.

Any ideas on how I can stop the camera from doing that? I have an AC adapter connected to the camera, the camera connected to the PC and PSRemote controlling the camera.

Thanks in advance...
Al

Check your manual; page 31 I think.

If a raccoon ate the manual, enter the set-up menu on the camera and choose "Power Saving". Change "Auto Power Down" to "Off".

Thank you for you the quick response.

I had already tried that, but when running through PSRemote, it still shut down. I have the CHDK hack applied to the S3, so don't know if that was causing a problem.

It is not supposed to do that. I am not sure if it is supposed to abort a tethered shoot at all (regardless of power saving settings), but definitely not when "Auto Power Down" is disabled. Perhaps there is a problem with PSRemote.

I just tried a 10 minute tethered time lapse with one picture every 15 seconds using RemoteCapture on Windows XP. The camera stayed on the whole time (the LCD goes black, but the power light stays on and the pictures get taken). This was with "Auto Power Down" set to "Off", and the camera running on batteries.

Probably not, but it is easy enough to try without it. For reference, CHDK was active during my little test, albeit a slightly old version.

I will try it again when I get home tonight. If it works, it is going to upset me a bit. I was in Manhattan last week on a training course, and wanted to try and get some time lapse in (sunsets, sunrises, etc.). Darned camera kept shuttion off on me.

Came home tonight and disabled the auto shutdown, hooked the camera up to my desktop as well as my netbook, and was able to capture some images with PSRemote. The camera did not turn off on me at all.

This is great news, except I keep thinking about those time lapse shots I missed in New York.

Oh well. I will have to try some around the region here. Maybe one of those famous sunsets over Lake Huron. Or some night time stars. Or the leaves turning color in the fall. Or... there are so many things I want to try...

Chopper Al: I see in your reply that you visit Manhattan. Please do me a favor and next time you plan to visit Manhattan you allow enough time for us to visit with each other over a cup of coffee so that I can pick your brain re: CHDK hack as I want to learn it but without someone's help it's too complicated. I want to experiment shooting RAW images. Your reply to my email address will be appreciated. yceddie@earthlink.net (external link)
