Hey Guys,

I am definitely falling in love with lighting! I would really like a nice reflector that is 72" tall. Does anyone have experience with the photoflex litepanel or the westcott scrim jim? I will use it for on-location work. I am a single shooter with no assistants and i really have no problem with set up and take down (if i can do it myself).

Thanks!

I have the 6'x6' Scrim Jim with both silk scrim and reflector fabrics and I wouldn't trade it for anything.....

The 72"x72" PhotoFlex LitePanel isn't bad either, but you will occasionally experience "gaps" of light coming thru the panel due to any slight wind because of the fabric not being flush along the frame. PhotoFlex uses four elastic corners (that will eventually over time, stretch and lose it's firmness) and that doesn't allow for a complete "stretch" of the fabric which in turn doesn't give you a complete 72"x72" of reflector coverage due to the saginess of the fabric. Because of the velcro design of the Scrim Jim, you get a very taut fabric once it is set up on the frame, which will allow for a more complete 6'x6'x flat reflective coverage with no sag in the fabric.....

This is priceless information. Thank you so much! I know have my mind set towards the scrim jim and I now know why they are priced more (which kinda pisses me off).

Do you think i should get the 6'x6' scrim jim or the medium sized one 6'x4'. i'm not sure which to get. I will use it for the outdoor application

You can buy my sunswatter in my signature :) It's the exact size you are looking for. It's alittle on the expensive side, but breaks down flat in 2 seconds, and is portable for when changing locations...

DEFINITELY the 6'x6'..... It'll be worth it in the end.
Also, because of the Scrim Jim's pole design, instead of using two 3' pieces to make a complete 6' side frame, guess what? The use a 2' piece and a 4' foot, which means that you can also use the 6'x6' Scrim Jim and put yourself together a 4'x6' Frame..... YES! IT'S LIKE HAVING TWO DIFFERENT SIZE SETS OF FRAMES IN ONE!!!

Here are some sample shots of mine with "Pull Backs".....
I also have a little video that I just recently put together that you might enjoy.

Pull back shot..... using the 6'x6' Scrim Jim with the White/Silver Reflector Fabric.
Setting sun is coming in from the left over the Model's shoulder and being reflected back into her using the soft white side of the fabric panel.....

Here I am shooting another model and using the 6'x6' Scrim Jim with a White/Silver Reflector Fabric. The SJ is attached to a stand with a 20lb sand bag and a 400ws flash bouncing into the reflector. Final outcome is basically a 6'x6' "softbox" on location.....

From a slightly different angle, but here is a Three-Quarter shot of model using the soft white side of the fabric panel with 400ws flash being bounced into the white soft side of the fabric. Sun is rising to the left of the shot.

Here's the rising sun at about 10am and the silk fabric is being used on the 6'x6' Scrim Jim place between the sun and the subject to cut down the contrast. The sun is just to the left of the shot. NO PULL BACK SHOT.....

Here's the rising sun at about 8am and the silk fabric is being used on the 6'x6' Scrim Jim place between the sun and the subject to cut down the contrast. The sun is directly behind the camera shining right into the Model's face. NO PULL BACK SHOT.....

+1 for the Scrim Jim. I've used both the Photoflex as well as the Scrim Jim, and there is absolutely no comparison in quality. The Westcott is a little more expensive, yes, but well, well worth the money.

I ordered mine via Amazon (which actually came from Adorama), and I also ordered the WHOLE Kit System which includes the Frame, Silk Fabric, Reflector Fabric and Carry Case.....
However, you can order them piece by piece or as a SINGLE Kit System.
