I meant the pros on the sidelines being denied the use of video-capable dSLRs...

There isn't a seat in Candlestick that's less than a quarter mile from the playing field so that's not an issue with the paying customers!

so do the pros have to use 1d mark IIIs instead of 1d mark IVs. that ridiculous, as the 1d mark IV has other improvements, like better high isos, 45pt af points that are selectable (like the older 1d mark II) bigger lcd, buffer etc

Somebody posted a rumor about a sports photo agency in Europe switching to Nikon to avoid being denied access because of video.

Not real sure they could say you couldnt use a MKIV....just doubt you could market the video if you shot it...

They exercise an incredible amount of control over what the credientialed shooters are allowed to use.

it happened in the UK somewhere, but the UK also tried to ban ALL photogs from a stadium unless they shot for a specific agency... so one paper then used cartoons!

but yeah, the NFL has tight control on their video footage, you couldn't sell it but that doesn't mean they want you recording it anyway...

Well, I decided to go to friday nights jet game with the camara in the trunk where it stayed all night. Inside the stadium people with dslr's and lenses more then the 3" limit. Fortunately, I have seats on the 17 row so I am close to the field. Since we are located where the teams come out, a number of fans came down by us and just stood around with long lenses waiting for people to come out of the tunnel and nobody said a word. At the end of the game I ren into what appeared to be a boss and asked him the question, his answer was no professional ones with long lenses. How long I asked? He held up his piece of paper (it was regular letter size) and held it lengthwise and said "nothing bigger then this"!

Screw it, I am going to bring it a long zoom and if anyone gives me a problem I am going to ask for the big boss!

About the only reason I'm going to bring my camera to the Ravens game is that I want to take a fisheye shot of the new stadium being packed. Other than that, I just want to watch the game.

The paper measurement is the standard here in South Florida Stadiums as well as in Yankee Standium (old one). I can take my 70-200F/2.8 IS MII but if you have the Nikon version they will NOT allow you to go in with it. Sometimes they will ask you to put the lens hood for the measurement so if the sun is not hitting your seats directly leave it at home.

I don't get it. Every time someone posts pictures they took at a football game, all I see is a bunch of football players piled on top of each other. They are the most boring pictures I've ever seen. Why would anyone go to a sporting event to see it live, and then spend the entire time with a camera glued to their face? Watch and enjoy the game. What on earth are you going to do with a bunch of boring pictures of football players taken from far away???

It's so people can post here and prove they "stuck it to the man..."

Because it gives certain people a chance to be all smug and superior acting? Why anyone come to a photography forum and then denigrate people for wanting to use their cameras?

Sure, I occasionally see some boring football pictures, but I also see some excellent shots of quarterbacks getting sacked, running backs getting hit and some good battles on the line. People take photos at games becausec their hobby is photography and they enjoy the challenge of getting some good shots. For most photographers, taking photos adds to the fun of being at a game.

What I don't understand is why would a photographer dissuade other photograhpers from taking photos at any event where there are photo opportunities.

I dont get it.
