Can anyone who has the original 5D,and the newer 5DII,tell me if there is any real world differences between the two bodies..
Please keep in mind,I am NOT a professional photographer, and most of my enlargements are 81/2 X 11 ins.

I have the opportunity to pick up a refurbished body from Canon with a 90 warranty.
Would like to get some fees back from someone who has both bodies.

Thanks
Mike

Don't have either body, but this is what I know:

MarkII will add:

HD video
increased MP
mirco adjust

It's my understanding that Canon has changed their upgrade program for the better.

I would get the Mark II for the micro adjust alone.

Just my 2 cents.

Image editing OK.

I had a 5D and replaced it with a 5DII.

Much better rear LCD so I don't have to go (more) blind looking at the histogram...etc.

Micro Adjust. I've needed it for a couple of my lenses.

More pixels to crop with. If you do little cropping or don't print larger than 8.4 x 11, you'll see no difference in the prints.

If you shoot at high ISO, > 1600, the 5DII will give you a bit more than 1 extra stop to play with. At 1600, it's still much better but the 5D was, usually, good enough for me. I shoot a LOT at ISO3200 so that was a very important reason for me going to the 5DII.

Small things like ISO in the viewfinder. I forgot more than once to change my ISO after a nights shooting. No big deal but an improvement, nevertheless.

That's about it. Mainly more ability to crop and better high ISO performance.

AH, yes... that's actually a big improvemnt, imo. I was constantly cleaning my 5D's sensor. I've done it twice in 10 months on my 5DII.

Plus 3 custom modes on the dial. And a faster buffer + UDMA support so you don't have to wait as long while files are transferred to the card.

I'm thinking strongly about his upgrade as well. Thanks for posting so I can see the 'ups' that might be associated with the upgrade!

Is there anything you'd like to be better? If you are happy with your 5D keep it.

I know more about gear than I know about photography :p

price keeps dropping on the 5D II...down to 210,000 yen now from 264,000 yen about a month ago. Something is brewing...

the shutter button on the 5d felt like a sponge compared to the 5dii.

but I don't like reviewing photos on the 5dii and not seeing the iso unless you have the histograms displayed as well.

i'd be satisfied with a 5d with micro adjust and some cash for lenses instead of the 5dii.

If the price is dropping in Yen, does that mean it goes up in dollars?

Thank you. bw!

It means it stays the same. Either the price goes up in dollars or it falls in yen. All else being equal.

Biggest difference for me is live view. It makes landscape photography a joy.
