Should I sell my 5D?

Earlier this year I started out with a 40D. I upgraded to a 5D classic to give full frame a try. Initially (compared to my 40D) I was impressed with the large viewfinder and wider field of view. However now I currently have a 7D and 5D. The 7D to me has a nice viewfinder and I love the better screen, movie mode, etc. The 5D just seems so old to me. I do not do paid work often (I did one wedding for a friend), so I can't really justify keeping it for that.

When I go anywhere I find myself reaching for the 7D. Most of my lenses shine on the 7D. I find it hard to justify keeping a $1000 camera I hardly use when I could instead get some different glass.

Sounds like you should sell it, I'd take full frame over 7d any time, but I understand the 7D is a great camera and it is probably more versatile for your needs. Maybe sell both for a 5D2? ;)

For non-professional work the APS-C cameras are a steal. If you should ever want crazy bokeh you can get exceptionally close using L primes and good technique. A hobby is a hobby, so do what works for you. But since you mentioned price... just remember, shoot to please yourself, not this forum, not Canon, and not the customers you don't have!

I went from a 5Dc to a 7D and eventually sold it for a 5Dii. Your mileage may vary but you'll probably find yourself yearning for full frame again.

Can you explain why FF appeals to you? I know people mention the shorter depth of field, better high ISO, etc....but in real life I'm not seeing it.

From your posts it's clear that you should.

I agree that you're better off having your investment in glass, because if you're not making money on it then you don't need a backup body. And as long as you take care of your lenses they should hold their resale value better than the spare body will.

Both the 7D or 5D are perfectly decent cameras, so just keep whichever one you're happier with. It's ultimately about your preferences and shooting style. In this case it sounds like that's the 7D.

I have never owned or even tried the 7D. I have owned or tried extensively the 30D, 40D and 50D. I have a 5Dc (along with a T2i)

Here's why I kept the 5D over the 30D, 40D and 50D:

- for me (I know this is not the case for everyone), low light performance is much better in the 5Dc - this means stage lighting using 1600ISO

- portraits (again for me) tend to be better overall.

- I like the lenses to behave the way they were designed to

- in PS, the 5Dc files are much cleaner, smoother, easier to manage, easier to improve - whatever you want to call it.

I am hoping to hear that the 7D is better than the 5Dc in low light, high ISO (not normal lighting in high ISO which is how most people like to comment). But, from all that I have read (again - the majority - not everyone) the 7D is not quite there with the 5Dc in terms of low light, high ISO performance.

If the majority of my work did not invlove portraits, landscapes or low light high ISO (i.e. if sports, wildlife and everyday usage was my preference) I'd probably get a 7D (heck I might have kept the 50D - a very fine camera!)

I just bought a 5D a few days ago.

i still have my 7D and i came from a 50D before that. the 5D feels like i've stepped back in time as it's really old compared to the 7D. user interface is much easier, IMO, on the 7D.

i'm liking the image quality of the 5D however and it seems warmer than my 7D (7D feels cold and very digital to me). sounds like you've lost faith in your 5D so maybe it's time to sell it and get some money back :)

It may feel older to use and it is old but it is an extremely capable camera just look around for some of the amazing work, the 7D may be close but it will never have the straight out of camera quality of any full frame sensor new or old.

If you gotta ask if you should keep it, then sell it - simple, really!

The 7D is better than than the 5Dc at ISO 3200 (and above), albeit slightly. The 5Dc has a bit better DR and sharper image out of camera due to the weaker AA filter though, and that in itself is worth quite a bit. I would take optical sharpness over raw or jpg post processing digital sharpness any time. I plan on getting a 5Dc again as my backup here shortly (or maybe the 5DII if I play my cards right).

the 7d is pretty good at high isos, but i really wish it was as good as the 5d mark II, though it handles very well with its great af and high speed burst for sports.

It's a decision only you can make, and it pretty much sounds like you've already made it. What people "out there" say about 5D vs 7D or FF vs crop really doesn't mean much - all that really matters is your own preference based on your own experience.

(Me? I've got a 5DII, but I'd kinda like a 7D to go with it :) )
