16GB card formatted to 8GB

I just got two new 16GB CF cards for my upcoming trip to africa. I took about 30 pictures on it to make sure everything was working fine, then I formatted it. Now the card only says 7.81GB and I can't seem to get it back to the default 16GB, regardless of whether I format it on my 30D or on my PC.

Any ideas? I'm worried about formatting the 2nd 16GB card I got.

Still curious if anyone knows of a firmware update or something to allow for native formats of 16GB cards with the 30D.

Not for the 30D, I dont think they ever updated that one. They did for the 5D, and the 40D supports larger cards too.

They did update the 30D, here's a forum thread where Chuck Westfall said that the the 30D supports in-camera of CF cards with capacities higher than 8 GB. I use a 12GB card in my 30D with the latest firmware and dont have problem formatting.
