We're going to Tahiti soon and I'm conscious of the weight restrictions on Tahiti air.

They have a walk on luggage restriction of 6 kgs, (13.2 lbs) and when I add up my 7D, 24-70L, 55-250 IS, 10-20mm sigma, 430 XII, charger, cleaning gear etc its getting up there.

Whilst its in a backpack, its still going to be heavy to lug around.

Now I've got the 24-70 L, and a flash on the 7D (albeit a small one) I'm thinking of off loading the 430 EXII to lighten the load. Most of my pics will be scenery and portraits.

What are your thoughts?

I'd say bring all of it and just sling the camera/24-70 on your neck if you go overweight.. then just put it back on the bag after you pass by the check in area :D

How much does your bag weight with all the gear? Are you going to check-in any bags? If so, maybe off load some of the in-expensive stuff in there, like the flash, cleaning gear. I would leave the charger & battery with the backpack, just in case the check-in bag gets lost.

Of course, Monk3y also brought up a good suggestion.

yeah I figured most of the weight is due to the 7D and the 24-70mm.. 55-250mm is pretty light weight, I am not sure about the 10-20mm but I know its not as heavy as the 24-70mm

Goodluck on your trip:D

ohh hello Kabayan :)

yes, they are not very strict in implementing weight limits of carry on baggages here though...I just pretend my 12kg backpack is light (7kg limit).

Agreed with everyone here. Bring your camera bodies, lenses, and chargers with you. Everything else, put it in check-in. That includes the speedlite, battery grips, cleaners, etc. Basically, you'll want to bring with you the bare essentials you'll need to perform a shoot even if your checked in luggage gets delayed. So camera, lens, batteries, charger (only one if you have multiple of the same kind as that's all you really need in a pinch), and memory cards. Everything else, you can probably pick up at a store in an emergency, or isn't absolutely necessary to take a simple picture. Put the tripod/monopods in the checked luggage as well as some airlines may give you grief (it's very inconsistent).

Only if you have extra weight capacity afterwards should you add more stuff to your carry on, probably in order of most expensive first (ex. speedlite).

Double check the airline's policy on lithium batteries; some say that they don't want them in checked luggage unless they're installed in a device (guess they're concerned with explosions being unchecked), and some airlines even have restrictions on the amount of lithium you can bring on board, although for the most part, if they're protected from external short circuiting by using proper battery covers or holders, it should be fine (although realistically, that doesn't have much to do with a li-ion battery's tendency to explode as that more comes down to the way the battery was constructed in the first place and whether or not there's too many bits of metal or other contaminants floating around that can puncture the inner separator of the battery causing a short-circuit within the battery that can trigger an explosion, but hey, security officials have to look like they're doing something about it, right?).

lets see...wear a photo vest loaded with batteries, charges, filters..etc. Then have the camera around your neck. The bag should get by the weight restriction. Reload the bag after checkin and security.

In all my years of flying I have never had a carryon weight checked until we got to South Africa...and then only one one flight. I showed them it was camera equipment that obviously could not be in checked luggage. Obviously. They smiled and gave me the approved labels. ;)

hahaha. You will have allot of people waiting behind, since you have to empty your pockets. Imagine the look on the security guards faces at the security check-in when you pull out a 5Dii, 7D, 16-35L II, 24-70L, 70-200/2.8L is II, 400/2.8L, charger, 6 batteries, cables, & 2*580exII's from your pockets.

now assuming your concern is being within the limits of the weight of your airline...

1) don't make it LOOK heavy... and even if you're over by 1 kg, they will not realize it.
2) ship the chargers and flash, maybe even your cheaper lens... the 55-250
3) i think you're still fine...

7D @ ~900gr
24-70 @ ~900gr
10-22 @ ~700gr

heck, you still got some room for book, bag, and other stuff...

but if your concern is how to carry all that gear when you are in tahiti... heck, i'll be your sherpa... and i'll bring all my goodies as well!
hahaha
