Just bought one BNIB found on local Craigslist for $190. There's a glut of them for sale now.

I live on Vancouver Island Canada so shipping is a concern.Would the Canon perform better than the HP?

Atlex.com has the Epson Stylus Photo 1400 for $279 with free shipping.

==> Here (external link). That's after an $80 rebate, looks like.

Very nice small office printer. Should suit you well if you need to print bright colored garage sale flyers...

If you want a great PHOTO printer... Still plenty of HP B8850s available. Pigment ink, superb B&W.

Stay away from Epson. Printers are good and the prices are fair, but the ink will cost you 10-20% more than Canon or HP. After a year or two you'll have paid x2 for an Epson printer. Epson has a real strangle hold on their ink tank technology and they go after anyone that infringes. There are almost no third party options; most are hear today, gone tomorrow style companies if you can find them at all.

Ink Jet Mall has inks for Epson and a bulk fill system. Actually seeems to be more support for Epsons than most others. Have tried Canon and HP printers keep coming back to Epson. Had a 1200 first (it is converted to balck and white only) and have had my 2400 for more years than I can remember. Can't beat em for color gamut and ink longevity. Look on Printerville's site, and check out duncandavidson.com

Yeah, but the OP asked for a 13" printer for under $500. How many options does Epson offer?

The one I posted for $279 above. :)

@ The OP

And then go read the many many posts on this forum about getting help for Canon printers, and then look for problems with Epson printers.

Most of the professionals (actually, now that I think about it, all of them) use Epson printers, though generally they are wider than 13".

If you want good color reproduction, extended life (I also have and so far faultless R2400 as well as an early R300 which still prints perfectly), and, so far for me at least, zero problems in say, ten years, then I suggest you think about Epson.

Don't worry about the price of ink, this is art. If you worry about the price of the ink, what are you going to do when you find out how much B3 paper costs? :)

Seriously, though, there's one high-end camera shop where I live, with a whole store devoted to digital - and there's more Epson paper (both by shelf space and types of paper) than there is of all the other papers there, including Canon, Ilford, and artisan papers of all kinds.

Epson has a 150.00 rebate on the 1900 (excellent printer) that brings the price under 400.00. Most of the problems people have with Epsons are they just don't print enough, got to print at least once a week or heads dry up. I also keep my computer/printers in a climate controlled room, that is I huse a humidifier in winter and a dehumidifier in summer. Most peoplle really do not print enough images to make any printer worth the money. UNLESS you are looking for more control over your printing. Good luck, and the above response is correct, most of the pro's are using Epson's unless they are getting free printers and supplies from sponsors.

One.

My take on this is that most of the POTN members asking for help with the Canon 9000/9500 printers are primarily price driven and using a real photo printer for the first time. The Epson users are generally more experienced with printing and related color management concepts. It's not a matter of Canon (or HP) printers having more problems than Epsons... they don't.

Probably correct. That's the impression I soemtimes have as well. And as someone wrote above, (and I agree) it's much like the choice of camera bodies. Nikons are foreign to me...Canons aren't.

Yeah, I saw that too and that would be MY choice, except for its lackluster B&W performance. If B&W is not an issue, the Epson 1900 is the best in this price range.
