I have owned the Canon 50 1.8 and the Canon 50 1.4, liked both of them. I picked up the Sigma 50 and love it. The only way I get rid of this lens if I trade down to the Sigma 30. I am questioning the focal length now that it mounted so much more than the Canon's were.

The comparison tool at the-digital-picture shows the Sigma 1.4 is a little sharper than the Canon 1.4up to about F2, then above F2 the Canon lens is sharper in the corners for both crop and full frame.
I'm expecting my copy of the Canon 50mm 1.4 lens tomorrow. Should be fun. :)

hmm...
this thing is flimsy feeling...
hmm...

50 1.8 II
lol... this thing works?
yep, it works...
but it's now broken in 3 pieces... snapped it back together, hence for me, it's a snap tite fifty... no longer nifty...

maybe i'll try the sigma next...

but the 50L was a bit of a love hate kinda thing...

How is there a learning curve with the 50L? It's just like any 50. Just like the 85L and the 85mm f1.8. I didn't find a huge different in use.

And it should definitely be easier to use with your 7d.

So how would I test the Sigma 50mm f1.4?

There are no perfect 50 but closest would be the Zeiss 50 MP and that is MF. If however you can overlook the 50mm range and go slightly wider (few steps only) do seriously consider the 35L.

My perfect 50mm (within reasonable price range) turned out to be a Canon 28mm 1.8. If I had a full frame body, I think I would have opted for a Sigma 50 1.4. Or some manual focus lens. I really feel like the Canon 50 1.4 isn't what it's supposed to be, but the shots from the Sigma look lovely.
As a 50 backup lens I use the 50 1.8 II, which is ok-ish.

I've had 2 50/1.8's, 3 Canon 50/1.4's and 1 Sigma 50/1.4 and I'd say out of the 6 AF 50mm lenses I've used, I would go with the Sigma but YMMV.

I've owned them all at one point or another (including the 1.8 Mark I). They all had some positives, and all had some shortcomings. I no longer have a 50mm in my kit, mainly because I finally figured that 50mm isn't for me...

If you shoot past 5 feet when using apertures 1.4- f/4 the 50L will be perfect for you.....or shoot f/1.2 all of the time :)

Defining a "learning curve" for a broken design of the 50L is simply stating the flaws of the lens. Canon has got to make a markII version.

Marlon grabbing the 50L thinking it will work like your 85L is gonna make you very disappointed. Even though I hate SimaDUD's 50mm (bought two and have tested like 7????) they all have issues straight out of the box.All of the 50L's I've tested backfocus/focus shift.

My Canon 50 f/1.4 doesn't have the greatest bokeh but its rock solid regardless of aperture or distance. Landing the shot and post processing is better than the issues of the 50L or Sigmadud.

However if I can find a Sigma that is not a dud I'll buy it.

If you do buy a 50L it will be fine when you print. Printing small prints it can hide backfocus quite well.

I personally dont mind threads like this because new POTN members can see the on going questions. If the questions stopped the POTN would be a dead forum.

Marlon for bragging rights buy a 50L so you have a redring collection :) Just live with focus shift.

Definitely! I have a knack for buying broken Ls anyways. My 35L has a chip in the front element - it's the size of a tiny dust particle. (sigh). Bought it for 800 i think. LOL. My 24-70 was bought for 850 and it had CRAZY outfocusing issues and I've sent it to canon and it came back with the PCB board and focus assembly replaced for free. It is not CRAZY SHARP!

hahaha
