I didn't really want one, but I had to buy a wireless remote for my Nikon SLR when I found one for 10 bucks. Now I don't know what to do with it. Suggestions, you guys? What is a remote good for?

for shooting your camera wirelessly... ??? (this feels like one of those trick questions :) )

Could you think of situations where you would want to hit the shutter button, but didn't want to be near the camera? If so, that is where you would use a wireless remote. Are you looking for ideas?

Yes I am looking for ideas (I know a wireless remote clicks the shutter wirelessly, ha). I can't think of any creative way to use it that I can't do with my self-timer.

I bought a wireless remote for my XTI several years back and it never came out of the bag. I used the wired remote many times, but the wireless required me to be in front of the camera to use it.

I bought the wired remote for my 50d when I first got it, but have not got the wireless remote for it.

I guess what I am trying to say is that I could never find a use for a wireless remote either.

You mean that you could run to a position 150' away from your camera, and appear in the photo without being disheveled and out of breath?!

Or you won't need to set up your camera on a tripod a few feet from a hummingbird feeder, while you trigger the camera from a unnoticed position?

Hummingbirds

Other wildlife

Capturing the babysitter doing naughty things

Getting yourself into a group shot or whatever else you want to take a picture of while in front of the camera

Bulb mode usually better with a wireless remote, no touching the shutter or holding the shutter down

Does this help? :)

I use the timer more than my remote, about the only time the remote comes out is if I dont have anything to set my focus on before I step in front of the camera for a self portrait...

Naughty baby sitters?

They are everywhere, you just have to know where to look.

You never want to take two shots of a group you're in? Never needed to take selfies without an assistant to trip the shutter (or stand in for the AF)? In self-timer mode the camera AFs when you press the release, not when the shutter actually trips, so a remote lets you trigger that selfie while you're there for it to AF on.

I'm interested in getting the wireless to use when I'm next to the camera! I'm planning to work on some "super duper" sharp pics. I'll have the camera on a tripod and use the wireless to prevent the micro-jiggles pushing down the shutter manually causes.

Have you seen the amount of camera shake that's still visible in Live View while using a 2-sec self-timer? Remote will always > a self-timer, not to mention the freedom it provides.

Depends on what tripod you're using. Mine completely damps out any shake after about a second.
