I have decided to replace the canon 18-55 kit lens (older non IS) and have decided on the Tamron 17-50 non VC. My question now is whether to spend the extra 100-130 bucks and buy it new. There is currently a 45.00 mail-in rebate which helps keep it closer to the used prices. Any thoughts on if it is a better idea to buy this lens new or save the money and pick up a used copy? Thanks for any advice you may have.

6 year warranty from Tamron if you buy new + $45 rebate means I would have a hard time going used.

Thanks for the reply. I ended up just now buying it from Amazon. I think the 6 year warranty and rebate helped in my decision. I'm pretty excited, I only shoot with my 50/1.8 because the images just seem so much nicer vs the older 18-55 kit lens. Time to start using a zoom.

It must be better than what I have and I have never used a "L" lens, I figure I'll be pretty impressed. If not then it would have to be a pretty bad lens, but I doubt that's the case.

Eh..warranty? Just buy a used one with the box and warranty, problem solved. Buying new gives people a fuzzy feeling when they go to the store..I have yet to find a problem with used gear and I do A LOT of business here.

But we are talking maybe $50 savings going used. Why bother?

Eh? You can get a new one for $325? The difference is closer to $100 no?

You're going to like it. It's on my camera 90% of the time. Of course I only have 2 lenses, but still.

I'm in the same position, but looking at the VC version. I tried it out in a brick and mortar store, and as much as I'd like to help out my local business, I can't justify the $100+ price difference when compared to buying online.

I was going to ask, has anyone bought grey market/import lenses? It would be about $80 cheaper than the price on Amazon, so I guess the price difference would be more peace of mind by getting a 6 year warranty.
