Renaming Raw Files

hello all.

I am hoping someone can help me. Can anyone tell me how I can rename multiple RAW files without changing the file type. I can successfully rename all other types of file in photoshop such as Jpeg or Tiff, but when I try to rename RAW files the format also changes and they become PDF files.

Many thanks.

.

Irfanview freeware - Batch rename. Just a couple days ago I renamed several thousand CR2s when I decided to use a naming scheme that distinguishes between my two cameras.

This is impossible. For some odd reason, you might be changing the file extension from .cr2 to .pdf, but just using the OS's renaming capability should not do ANYTHING to the internals of the file. If it is, you are using a sucky OS.

The freeware I have been using for those kind of tasks is Faststone. It fast and easy and can do a lot more then renaming. Give it a try.

If you are using Windows, just select all the files and rename. It will give them all the same name with a sequence number.

I ran into this problem this weekend and came here seeking a solution. Fastone doesn't seem to offer a CR2 extension as one of the choices for renaming. ALl the extensions are the various graphic file formats. And there doesn't seem to be an ability to add an extension. Am I missing something?

I was hoping for a Fastone solution if one existed, since that's what I've been using.

I don't understand why the application has to "offer" the extension? The file already has the extension. I've never encountered an application that wouldn't let me rename a file and leave the file type alone.

I've been using Bridge to batch rename for awhile. Its tool for this is fairly sophisticated and nice to use. I was easily able to create a preset to rename incoming images based on the current date -- e.g., from IMG_1350.CR2 to 2013-04-29_1350.CR2.

When I navigate to the folder that has the files I want to rename, Fastone only displays the files that match a predetermined set of extensions. CR2 is not one of them and there doesn't seem to be any way to add it. In a normal files window you can search for specific file types or ALL. (I should note that I'm using Fastone on WIndows, if that makes a difference).

Ah, I see what you were saying now. I thought you were already working with the files in a given program, thus the file showed up. That's why I was confused. Thanks for clarifying.

This technique uses parentheses () when numbering for instance renaming all of your files to Joe would result in Joe (1).CR2, Joe (2).CR2, etc.

You may have to go to the [Settings] tab, click on the [Settings] line (or just press the F12 key for the settings box), then go to the [Associations] tab and make sure the CR2 checkbox is checked. I have been using FastStone for years (on version 4.7 right now) and never had any issue renaming raw files, either batch or individually. Also, when renaming files individually, it doesn't show an extension in the name pop-up box unless the "Show Extension" checkbox is checked. FastStone doesn't change the file type/extension unless you specifically ask it to, such as in Batch Convert.
