I have been a bit of a gear whore in the past and suppose I still am. I've owned nearly every EOS body except the 1D original and 1Dsmk3. Over the last year I've shot primarily with the 5DmkII and the 1DmkIII.

I've never enjoyed the size of the 1 series bodies, just everything else about them. I shoot a bit of everything...Family, sports, portraits, music, even the occasional BIF. Because of the size of the 1DmkIII I was shooting with my backup 20D a lot, and, it got me to thinking and, well here I am, a 7D owner

OK, initial thoughts....AF is snappy, VF is nice and bright for a cropper (seems as big as a 1 series or 5D.) ISO looks way better than any crop body and really, looks somewhere near my 1DmkIII. I know I will be corrected and told that there's no way they're close, but I'm not a scientist, only an advanced amatuer and as such, am very impressed with it's high ISO capabilities, especially considering the 1.6 crop factor.

Build is solid, IQ reminds me of my old 5DmkII, images are sharp, color is great....The rear LCD is crazy nice....Haven't used all the bells and whistles yet or the video, but...Wow....I was expecting a suped up 50D....This seems much better, a definate step up from the xxD...Like you should expect a body between the xxD and 1D line to be.

I've only shot 50 or so test type shots and am converting them to JPEG now.......But....I'm a bit excited.....and thought I'd share my enthusiasm.

Cool...

I'll be interested in seeing what you think of the 7D since your creativity is already a known quantity.

I'm in the process of offloading a 5DC and a 40D to pair my MkIII with a MkIV.

Thanks Guys...Jay, poor you eh? 1DmkIII and IV...:) Nice.
For some reason, I just can't do the big bodies anymore
Hopefully I can tap into some of that creativity with a new toy like this...
Shooting my daughters "Senior Pictures" tonight.....So, we'll see how it goes :)

I just gave up my 5DII for a 7D. I'm very interested to see how it performs versus my 1D bodies. I'm glad to hear you are, so far, impressed with the 7D ISO and performance!

I simply wanted to homogonize the sight through the VF...

Got tired of doing the mental math in trying to figure out which flavor of sensor to bring for what event and what that would do to FOV and "reach." I always seemed to guess wrong and end up too short with the 5D or too long with the 40D. Now, it is what it is and I'm fine with APS-H.

Of course, the new bells and whistles don't hurt and I might even dabble in video some since I have a little experience in that field.

You've discovered what I've been saying all along...

7D is more of a "1D MkIII/IV Lite", than a "50D on steroids".

Enjoy.

p.s. Hmmmm. I'd never give up my 5DII for a 7D... I use them together, to compliment each other... but they are quite different purpose cameras and I waited four or five years to finally get a full frame DSLR!

Congrats, you'll love it.

I just went 5Dii -> D700 -> 7D and a week later got a loyalty 5Dii again and ended up selling it, not enough of a gain over the 7D and with a ton less features so I sold it...

it's actually slightly bigger than a 1 series provided it's got a APS-H sensor and smaller than the 5D's but not by much.

Thanks, yeah...Was the first thing I noticed, very bright, and comfortable....There was a bit of a wow involved with that....

Checking out the JPEGS I'm very happy with it. We'll see how it goes...So far so good.
Still at work...So...LOL....I'll probably post some shots and more impressions tonight.

I sold my 1DsII for a 7D and don't regret it at all. I didn't use the 1DsII in the rain and I'm very careful with my equipment so really the structural strength of the 1D series isn't needed for my uses. The 7D just impresses the hell out of me. The AF on this thing is every bit as good as the iDsII was, it has live view which I like to use for macro and all the other features like MFA etc are a nice bonus. I will likely pickup a 5dc next year just to have the FF look for portrait work and that should hold me nicely for a while.

So, can I use LR2 still?
If not I've found my excuse to buy LR3 :)

May need the newest ACR (and hope that LR2 supports it...)

you went my route I just did a few weeks ago...LOL
Only difference is you dont like the 1Series size and I hated the size and feel of the 7D..So hope it works out for you..it was a pretty nice camera and loved the movie function on it. I guess I am not the norm here but I felt the viewfinder on the 7D may have been big it wasnt very good to look through if you wear glasses..i couldnt see the edges on each side so framing was an issue..I think the 1DIII VF is much better and can see everything

LR2 should work. It would use ACR5.7 which will support the 7D files.

That said, you should really just make up an excuse (if you have to) to get the LR3/ACR6. The new noise-reduction algorithm they use is absolutely fantabuloso and I am not exaggerating. And they've now added lens profile feature and seemingly adding more profiles with each update.

Enjoy the camera. I shot my first air show with it on Sunday. It's not 10fps but 8fps firing away was such a heavenly sound. (I can't say every shot was sharp, but that's more because *I* wanted to shoot at 1/160s-1/250s to try and get some prop blur while panning.) In other words, user error.

But my shots of the F-18 at 1/1000s were all sharp. :D

I read and kept up with your saga...:)
I don't wear glasses full time and especially not when I shoot....So, for me the VF seems perfect....love it.
Interesting to have the different opinions and preferences eh?
