This press release from Exposure Manager is a little vague in regard to how "events" compare to "galleries." Anyone care to try to clarify it for me?

Instead of galleries, you will start creating Events. That means you can manage everything for a specific Event from one page, instead of having to deal with multiple sub-galleries and individual settings. All the important settings can be managed from there; don't worry your basic reporting on sales and visitors is right there for you too.

Multiple layers of marketing will also be added - you will be able to offer early-bird discounts and free shipping promos! Because the system will now know when you published the Event, you can easily add early-bird discounts ("Great promo for the first 24 hours"). Better yet, you can now set an Event to expire automatically and have the system send out emails to procrastinating visitors just prior to expiration.

In addition to all of that, we will also be introducing the 'free shipping' discount. This has been often requested and we're thrilled to make that one happen (it's not just limited to the Event interface). The 'free shipping' discount can be used in more ways than one: early-bird discount ('order within x hours') and you can also have it trigger as a volume discount ("order over $50 and get free first class shipping").

Switching over to using Events will be very straightforward. You will be prompted to select which of your current galleries should be treated as Events going forward. Of course if you decide not to immediately switch to this new interface, you can stay on course with what you've been doing with the traditional EM admin screens, after all we don't want to upset the natives :) But I think when you see the new interface and its ease-of-use, you won't wait to switch!

We've been re-energized by these developments and we're more determined than ever to get you the tools you need. It is going to be a fantastic fall season!

I'm a little concerned also. Since I shoot HS sports, I need sub-galleries to have each game inside a gallery for each sport and for cheerleading competitions I need a sub gallery for each school/team. The kids don't want to scroll through all the shots to find. I hope that EM just poorly explained the changes.

Don't think there is reason to be concerned. You don't have to change to the new set up if you end up not liking it.

Have any of you used both EM and SmugMug? Migrated from one to the other? I'm in the process of exploring options. Thank you!
