Hi Y'all,

A month or so ago I took a picture looking under the late-afternoon sun at a bunch of ridgelines marching away into the haze. What I can't figure out is what makes the best way to crop it - I've tried horizontal:

and Vertical:

The colors, contrast and noise have been tweaked a little in Lightroom, but they're pretty close to what it looked like to my eye as far as colors and such. I tried bringing up the light on the closest hills, so you can see the trees/bushes (this IS Arizona!) but I preferred the darker look. Both crops removed some top sky and bottom close (dark) hills.
What do you think?

That second one really clicks with me, I like it a lot. The first one not so much, it doesn't seem to have the same depth that makes me like the second one. (though it is still good)

Thank you all for your kind words..:)

This was one of those pictures you don't notice until later - no colors to jump out at you..

I think they're both really nice, but I actually prefer the first one!

I like them both, and I really like Bend the Light's suggestions.

Yes, I did, too - Thank You, Bend!

Doing it square is easy:

But I am not sure I can put up a screen display that works for a Triptych (yeah, I had to look it up..:-) I may have to print it and get out the scissors..:)

And thanks again to all for the compliments!

In general examine the ratio of empty space to filled space. Empty space can be useful in some cases and distract in others. Because the nature of this image is a series of horizontal ridges this image wants to be a panoramic. It doesn't have to be but IMO it really works best this way.
