My camera started acting up this morning. Can someone help me? I have put in a different battery, different SD card and done an auto clean on the sensor. This did not clear up the problem. Please look at the attached photo and tell me what you think. Any help is appreciated. I had to crop the full picture to get it to attach.

Sadly your shutter is broken I think. To check, turn on mirror lockup via the custom functions, use a bulb exposure. With no lens mounted, press the shutter once to lift the mirror and look at the shutter. Does it look correct or can you see the sensor through the shutter? Next press and hold the shutter button, does the whole shutter go off the sensor or does some of it stay behind? I bet the shutter is broken and only part of it is moving. Hopefully it is still under warranty, it needs to be repaired. Sorry about your luck.

I think your right...I turned the camera on and off several times and it started working again. Could it be sticking? When I tried the shutter (using your directions) it seemed to be working fine. Not sure what happened but it looks like the shutter could have been lagging...does that make sense. I sure appreciate your help. I will keep you up to date on how this turns out. thanks a million!

Yes, this can sort of fix itself for a while. If it is out of warranty and you just do this for fun then you could wait but I'd hate to have important shots ruined by this. It is likely to come up again at the worst possible moment... just the way these things generally go.

Remember if it is an intermittent problem, when the repair shop has your body it may not mal-function. Be sure to take in some sample photographs for them to see. They may even want the jpg file(s).

Thanks Inspeqtor I sent in the SD card with the camera for repair...now get this....today I called since it has been 2 weeks that they (Canon) have had the thing....they tell me we have a part ordered. Okay then the lady tells me that it is a top cover assembly. The cover was not damaged on the outside. Does this make sense after looking at the attached photo? ARRGGGHHHH! Okay, I feel better now.

Top cover assembly in reference to something in the mirror box maybe? Could be something let go with the AF screen and was kind of floating around in there.

Perhaps you'd better get a 1D Classic for a backup? I happen to have a line on one.

Out of curiosity, how much did it cost or was it under warranty?
