So I've mainly just stuck to shooting "standard" and occasionally will switch to portrait or lanscape if the scene calls for it...

I'm curious to see what others have their custom settings set to and if they use them day to day?

I've been messing around with sharpness +4 Saturation +4 and Contrast +5

I'm definately getting a noticeable difference, but nothing i can do in pp.

Share your tips :)

Definitely interested in this post. I've been quite unsatisfied with the IQ of my 50D even when shooting with good glass (24-70L, 70-200 2.8 IS...) recently and am looking for a "best IQ settings" post (with the understanding that this may vary from one shooter to another.)

I'm not understanding what you are looking for. I shoot in "Faithful" color then PP in LR3/CS5. All I do on camera is set exposure (for darkness and highlights) and composition (framing & aperture) and that's pretty much it. Are you trying to get on your camera what you can do in PP?

I assume you are talking about the c1 / c2 settings - i only use them to pre-set shutter speed / aperture / ISO settings / AF mode.

When shooting sports C1 is for something like 1/800, 2.8, 1600, Servo Focus while C2 is set to 1/100, 2.8, 200, One Shot Focus or the like. That way i can quickly switch between "best IQ" for fast pace action and "best IQ" for portraits off the field.

In camera settings (saturation, contrast, etc) remain standard or faithful, NR off - these are things which will be modified in post, if required.

I think the OP is referring to "recommended" or "most used" picture style settings as well as sharpness and NR settings on the camera. That's what I think this thread is about anyway, and that's what I'm looking for also. I've been having a hard time looking at pictures I took at 3200iso, they're so noisy, so I figure I must have some settings wrong.

I use Standard most of the time. I'd play with WB shift occasionally, e.g., +3 red to make sunset more red.
I also tried some Picture Styles downloaded of the internet, that was fun but it's not something that couldn't be done post-shooting.

IMO, picture style doesn't affect IQ. It's more artistic impressions, than technical aspect.

Sorry I wasn't a little more clear with my post, didn't have my camera in front of me and forgot the exact name. If you gonyo quick menu you have something called picture style

Presets are
Standard
Neutral
Portrait
Faithful
Landscape
Mono
User def 1-2-3

Had anyone used a custom user definition to get awesome results?
I'm looking to start putting out pictures with as minimal time In LR3/Cs5 needed. I just don't wanna worry about undoing my presets in pp. Like for example sharpness in camera come out awesome for non portrait.

So, what's picture style custom setting are people using?

My Recommendation: do not shoot in jpeg, shoot in raw.
When you are shooting in raw, in postprocess you can afterwards change the exposure value, the white balance and of course the picture style. There a many free styles so you can play with them in DPP. And the best: DPP is free, comes with the cam.

But there is also a disadvantage: raw costs you more memory space - a typical raw from the 50D ist about 20-25 MByte. And it costs you more time, because you have to convert the raws after working on them into jpegs.

The biggest advantage for me is: i do not have to worry about the white balance when taking pictures. No Kleenex before the lens, no looking for a white wall - not using a greycard.

Cheers

RVP, Lomo, Japanese style, are cool ones to experiment.

+1

I rarely shoot in jpeg now, unless I want to quickly preview files on the computer in which case I'll use raw+jpeg. In my experience, raw IQ is streets ahead of jpeg and gives you so much more flexibility in post processing before conversion.

Well that is something I learned day 1 and have never shot in jpeg, also why I went and bought 2Tb worth of hard drive space.

The op had nothing to do with jpeg/ raw

I know it can all be done in post process but the idea is to cut down as much pp as possible.

Alot comes down to me wanting to give up my 50D for a 5Dc and trying to exclude all the bells and whistles to make sure I won't miss them... Such as custom picture style definitions Thanks

I think I'm confused. If you are not shooting in jpeg then I don't believe any of those types of settings apply. I shoot only RAW and haven't even bothered to learn those features.

Put your camera in RAW.
Push the little joystick in so u get quick menu and you'll see an S with a wheel of fortune looking thing, there's even a quick button for it below the LCD, play with the settings
