I think it was a smart move by Canon. Some nice features for entry level users. The odd thing is the 50D is a better build camera. This is certainly not an upgrade for 50D users. It would be a nice upgrade for a T1i or below user in the Rebel line.

I have a T2i and I am loving it !!!!

yeah, i just pulled the trigger on the T2i. I just didn't see the price difference ($300) enough top justify it for the 60D. I opted to get the T2i battery grip and I think it's gonna be one bad lil machine! Oh, and picked up the Canon Pro9000 printer for FREE (after rebate) so I am stoked!!

I think the 60D was a pretty good release, but I didn't need the articulating screen and the lack of micro-adjust was the last straw.

I got to page 15 or so and ran out of steam....

In my opinion, the 60D is quite appealing. I am a 400D/XTi owner about ready to upgrade my body. The T2i was obviously the front runner but the 7D kept catching my eye. Unfortunately, the price point of it doesn't as I can't justify that kind of money for a body. This is where the 60D comes in - it has the features I was looking for in the 7D for considerably less, and not much more than the T2i. I really think that the 60D has jumped into the lead for my new body in the fall.

As many have mentioned, it probably isn't worth it for current 40/50D owners, but it is something for 400/450/500D owners to think about.

I'm also a 400D owner, but I really don't see the 60D that much of an upgrade. Sure lots more mega pixels and video, but I don't really care much for that. I'm happily shooting with my 400D till I can afford a 7D, or even something like the Sony A900 (FF and NO video mode) in the long run.

Im happy and sticking with my 50D, seems like the 60D is more of a combination of the T2i and the 50D. I personally think it looks like a roided out Rebel.

my question would be, are dSLRs moving to SD cards now. it seems like nikon and canons amateur class uses SD cards and their pro lineup uses CF cards

Perfect observation, that's exactly what it is.... a combination of a T2i and the 50D.

Or it might be a little more T2i and less 50D. They added filters and something just shy of what Nikon has on their D3000 line with the "hold your hand" Basic+. The in-camera RAW processing is nice though, that is actually something convenient for folks who travel a lot.

Can someone expand upon the difference in the AF between the three models, in particular the advantages of a cross focus point.

AF works by comparing contrast on either side of the focus point. A normal, single-line sensor is either horizontal or vertical, and it is most sensitive to lines of contrast perpendicular to its orientation (so vertical lines for a horizontal sensor). A cross sensor is sensitive to both horizontal and vertical lines, so you don't have to pay as much attention to how contrast lines relate to the orientation of the AF point, and cross-type points are often more accurate than single-line ones.

The 1000 and 100-series cameras use a 9-pt AF system with one cross type point at the center, as do the 20 and 30D. The 40 and 50D have 9 cross type points, with an extra-sensitive center point using f/2.8 or faster lenses. This is the same system as the 60D. The 7D has 19 cross type points and an extra-sensitive center.

For comparison, and because people always rant about how Nikon has 5 million AF points in its cameras, Nikon and Sony cameras only have cross-type points in the center column, if not just one at the center (exception is the D3 series, which has all cross at the center 3 columns). All others are single-line.

you're that hung up over video you'd switch to a sony? Don't get me wrong, it's an impressive body, but you better like 2.8 zooms and want to pay a lot for them to get the most out of it. That and NOT like high ISOs. Or just not use video, your choice...

After thinking about this for a bit...I am not so certain that the 40D or 50D prices will drop that fast due to the release of the 60D. This camera is in a price point of it's own.

Time will tell

Yeah I agree with the build comment, however if you think about it, the 7D is the likely upgrade path now for 50D users (wanting video, etc) and now the 60D is the natural upgrade path for Rebel users (though probably not 550D users).

Cheers

How is the 60D not as well built as the 50D? You're one that is caught up on the "metal is better for cameras" notion? Plastic is more durable than metal. During impact of a fall, plastic will flex slowing down the impact where a metal body will either dent or bounce hard jarring internal components. Plus plastic is lighter which is one reason why the 60D is 0.2 pounds lighter than the 50D. The 60D is not just plastic, it is plastic over an aluminum frame. My great EOS-3 is made of engineering plastic and fiberglass and is notably lighter than my EOS-1v (which is metal).

For an extra $200, you get a body with much better ergonomics and manual controls. (And an articulating display, if you have any use for it.) I've always disliked the Rebel's ergonomics and would pay extra for that alone.

Extra $300. T2i goes for $800 and the 60D lists at $1100.

See above. Plastic has its advantages, metal body does not really have any.

Don't think I like the 60D's screen...

I like my 50D just the way it is. I'm not sure what I would do with a Vari-angle screen. Is it just for video...? Wouldn't I need a bigger monitor to really do video right...? Seems a little unprofessional... Maybe the 60D isn't professional...? All of the other features seem good...

i dont like it much either but there are some scenarios it could be helpful

perhaps you need to shoot over the heads of a crowd, you could tilt the screen downward and use liveview to compose

or if you want your perspective to be a little different.. close to the ground maybe.. you could tilt it up, again use liveview and take a pic w/o having to lay on the ground?
