DPR complained about how the flipping down LCD doesnt work with tripods in one of their reviews (something gets in the way of the LCD coming down)...don't remember which camera that was for, though.

Nikon d5000 as it was hinged at the bottom of the body.

Olympus used the swing-out LCD on their DSLRs first. It's on the E3, E30 and E620. What does this mean if Canon had the patent?

A few years ago I had a Canon compact camera with this type of screen and loved it. I have been wanting a DSLR with one ever since. I'm not going to buy the 60D since it's not small enough to be a light alternative to my 5D, but maybe when the xxxD series get one, or a future FF camera. Live View needs to be improved for it to be really practical though.

Articulated LCD =

  • Visions of a P&S
  • extra complexity
  • more bulk

No thanks.

You forgot lack of weather sealing....

The 60D has to be the ugliest dSLR Canon has put out to date. I'm not kidding. Even the badge looks like retro crap.

SLR cameras in general look cheesy! If you were buying the camera so you look cool, I got some disappointing news for you.... :p

I consider myself pretty cool and I think I have some aesthetically appealing camera bodies as a result for my personal preference for minimalism. Yes, I believe I do.

you're that hung up over video you'd switch to a sony? Don't get me wrong, it's an impressive body, but you better like 2.8 zooms and want to pay a lot for them to get the most out of it. That and NOT like high ISOs. Or just not use video, your choice...

Ye agree, sonys lens range is a bit expensive at the moment. I guess every camera has to do everything all the time these days.

Sure does. Self-fulfilling prophecy :)

Let's assume for the sake of argument you're right and people were expecting a 50D + 7D's AF system plus video--not universally true, but let's assume. The 7D would still have:
- higher continuous framerate
- dual processors
- dedicated AF processor
- 100% viewfinder
- better sealing

That still justifies a price premium to me. $400-$500 extra easily.

Bigger body and Mag vs. Polycarb are important factors as well.

For those of you who dislike the camera, what would you have put into the 60d had you been in charge?

Dead on. Canon doesn't want 50D owners to upgrade to the 60D, they want them to upgrade to the 7D. The 60D is the upgrade for Rebel owners.

thats the way i see it. also i see the original 40d and 50d's being worth more in value. I didnt see this coming, but it make sense to me now. XXD line up,as they have it, competes to napkins set up. Its really a D90 with canons lens line up behind it-------good for canon

as someone pointed out earlier, its a step up for the rebel line up and the 7d will be the new standard for the what was the old xxd line up---makes sense

old 50d and 40d owners just got another reason to keep thier bodies if they dont want to jump to a 7D or go full frame. And 7d owners just got another reason to hang on to the older 40and 50d bodes as 2nd cameras. This is actually a really smart way for a photographer to set him self up with out breaking the bank. The lens line up for the xxD line is great,,17-55,15-85,10-22,,60 macro,,gives anyone enough fire power to do anything they want to do. With some reach like a 70-200 you are very set in my opinion, theres nothing you cant do and,, with the 7d,, you have clean iso at 3200 which was never the case in the XXD line-------great set up and smart move for canon. really simplifys the line up now.

Now guys like me, that have both full frame and the 1.6 in the line up have all the bases covered. But that being said, I can see more people walking into a wedding arena with XXD set ups and really being able to deliver the goods the way canon has the line up going. 7d and a old 40d or 50d with the right lens lets you do anything most of us can deliver with the full frame set ups. I still prefer full frame for what i do, but a 7d/40d/50d, is right there and does the job.

new 60d is a consumer set up all the way. 7D and 5dMKII is the prosumer and first step professional set up,,1 series is the pro camera line up. I think this hurts the 1 series a little because 7d and 5dmkII are outstanding cameras and really deliver the goods. My guess is that canon with make big advancements for the 1 series to really seperate it from the rest of the line up.

i see the changes as a good thing and makes the body decisions easier to make for professionals and consumers

A diagram I drew up to help depict where Canon marketing is headed, I think it is pretty accurate, what do you think? Timeline obviously not drawn to scale, if I had a better drawing tool, I might have spent more time on it to make it more accurate in regards to release dates.

I think your drawing sums it up fairly. I was expecting the xxD line to continue straight. It didn't quite do that.

Well it was one of the deciding factors for me. Guess it's just a personal opinion, that's all.

Me too. One factor of several, but an important one.
