For those of you who dislike the camera, what would you have put into the 60d had you been in charge?

Well, judging by the comments on here the answer is simple. Take a 7D, replace the label with one that says '60D' and drop the price by £400. Even if they did that there would be some people whinging about it not being FF.

You forgot lack of weather sealing....

Where do you think this lack of weather sealing comes from? Given how sealed the 50D is, I don't see how this art. LCD is going to make that line any less sealed than before. There are many ways to seal a pivoting screen, from seals around the frame holding the LCD to multiple staged o-rings in any rotational point. In fact I would hazard a guess that this screen and its pivot points could be better sealed than the rest of the camera.

If you don't like the swing out LCD then don't buy the camera. There are many other options than just the 60D that has been rumor-hyped for the last 2 years.

No single camera is going to satisfy the masses which is one reason why there are so many models.

When 60D's price comes down it'll sell pretty well..

Here 7D's price was over 1800€ body only when it came out but now you can buy one with little over 1300€..

I think there's something for everyone in Canon's current lineup...

I changed 50D to little used 1D Mark III so I found something for myself.. :)

.... And soon we can moan about what's wrong with 1Ds Mark IV when it's out.. ;)

The hard part here is trying to compare a new release and its price to the prices you can find it one year later. At the start, everybody sells for around the MSRP due to the demand, then over time, different retailers are willing to eat into profit margins more, creating a larger diversity in price.

But you are correct, as I mentioned earlier, it will sell for $1100 usd for the first 2-3 months, then you will start to see the price drops to a point it will be $999 or so, and at that price point, this camera will be a big seller. It's fun watching all the complaints coming out of the woodwork. Happens each release, just different people at different levels.

You will know when the 60D becomes popular, because the threads comparing the 60D to the 5DII will start to post.

Don't worry. Many loyal xxD users won't be buying the "mother of all Rebels". ;)

Then your only choice is pony up more cash and get the 7D line up. :) I am sure Canon won't mind.

I have Rebel, this 60D is another Rebel. No point for upgrade for me.

Agreed. This is not an upgrade of the 50D. Bottom line... if it doesn't have AF Microadjustment, its a rebel!

Only 20% of the xxD line has MFA (1 out of 5), how does that define the xxD line? The better argument would be to bring up the chassis material for this.

For those of you who dislike the camera, what would you have put into the 60d had you been in charge?

exactly...

IMHO they should have left the FPS alone (if the 7D can go 8, keeping the 60D where the 50D was wouldn't be hard, it'd just cost them more on memory), kept MA in it, and left the sync port on the side. The metal -vs- plastic body is another issue, but it's not 100% negative. For those that think it's too small, add the grip like everyone around here loves to do anyway (not me). Light is good, provided it doesn't break. Not sure how it'll FEEL (which IS important to me) but I doubt it'll be too bad. But those few things are the issues that make it a "step down" from the 50D for some. The joystick is another hanging point, but to get the screen that pretty much had to happen. The new wheel/joypad doesn't seem bad, but it IS different (will take some adjusting). SD cards are another issue for some. Rebuying isn't a great complaint IMHO because new cameras (to you) almost always come with a MP increase so you (at least I do) buy new cards with new cameras. Sure your old cards can't be spares anymore, but SDs are cheap enough you could go buy 2 16gb SLOW cards for cheap, then one fast better card for normal use. My issue with SD is I've personally broken 4 of them over the last 7 years where I've NEVER had an issue with CFs. They're just not quite as robust.

Getting rid of the banding at high ISOs (assuming they did) is a MAJOR upgrade though. That alone makes this a significant upgrade IMHO.

They needed to position this between the T2i and 7D though. So they couldn't make it TOO similar to the 7D and they had to give people SOMETHING for their money over the T2i.

So yeah:

  • FPS
  • sync port
  • MA
  • plastic body

had those stayed then the only real complaint would be the screen which is as big of a plus to some as it is a minus to others. Personally, I DON'T need/want a flip out screen, but it would be VERY nice to be able to flip it around "closed" at times so you can't see it or scratch it.

No thank you. Thanks to the screen, the button layout blows now.

yeah, I almost wish it was touch screen... almost. Well, let me put it this way, if they let apple make the touch screen for them, then I think that'd be epic. But for whatever reason apple seems to be the only people who can make touch screens not suck...

then give us a few programmable buttons on the back so WE can decide what gets used how.

You know, you don't have to articulate it out from the body if you don't want to. I'm not a 60D fan or anything, but the articulating screen is non-issue if the resolution isn't dropped (which it wasn't).

yes except it adds size/weight to the camera. I know they went plastic and this could be the reason why. The whole body is smaller than a 50D was though. The nice part of the screen is you can flip it CLOSED and protect the screen, that's nice. Or go for the analog feeling again.

DPR complained about how the flipping down LCD doesnt work with tripods in one of their reviews (something gets in the way of the LCD coming down)...don't remember which camera that was for, though.

I'd imagine Sony's is fine though having used one (in a store). It's NOT a massive hing, it just "slides" up/down. It's actually quite nice.

I'm not going to buy the 60D since it's not small enough to be a light alternative to my 5D.

it's basically halfway between the 2?

I consider myself pretty cool and I think I have some aesthetically appealing camera bodies as a result for my personal preference for minimalism. Yes, I believe I do.

I was going to say you're not "cool" unless you're rocking a rangefinder, then I checked your gear list... I'm jealous!

Or spend none and stick with what I have. I bet Canon will mind. ;) Another option is to buy another 50D (new or used) to replace my 40D backup and settle in for the near future.

I'm really surprised they got rid of the sync port... I was even surprised the rebels didn't. Shooting with a rebel in a studio would always ruin my day.
