For those of you who dislike the camera, what would you have put into the 60d had you been in charge?

If they just would have kept everything about the 50d the same (including no video) and made a new camera to have better high iso than the 7D I would have thought they would have had a winner. However with this marketing strategy I would be aiming for people to want to upgrade. If you are a current rebel owner than you probably already have video and can just pull out that camera if you want to shoot video. If you are a xxd owner then your probably thinking to yourself "I dont have video now and can still do without it in light of being able to have very high iso shot at low noise".

If canon is marketing this to people who dont own dslr's then the only thing going for them is their name brand" The new entry level Nikon d3100 (for the price) and the Sony a55 both would intrigue me more as a first time buyer than the 60D. And if I wanted to go Canon then I would seriously consider the 550d.

Now this isnt to say that the 60D wont be an excellent camera but the thing is in todays dslr market what camera isnt an excellent camera?

You don't have to rotate the screen if you don't want to. You don't have to use live view, picture styles or ISO 12800 etc. but is it a bad thing to have them?

The difference between all of the features you mentioned and an articulating screen is that the other features have no impact to the build, layout or fit and finish of the camera body itself, where the twisty screen changes the camera body dramatically. It makes the screen pretty hard to ignore if it's not useful to you.

live view comes around, people don't get it and ****.
movie mode comes around, people don't get it and ****.
articulating screens come arond, people don't get it, and ****...

I see a pattern here....

[GIFS ARE NOT RENDERED IN QUOTES]

You can easily opt not use live view and movie mode. If the camera offers what you want but has an articulating screen, it has an articulating screen.

I wouldn't want one due to reliability concerns and it's impact on weather sealing. I feel like it's not build to last forever if it has an articulating screen and it's only real use is (IMHO) videoing stuff.

So I think, basically, the 60D would not be an upgrade from a 50D... From a Rebel, yes, but 50D owners now need to jump to the 7D/5D/1D for an upgrade... I guess a DSLR with video is inevitable... I guess the HD camcorder goes to eBay...

I just realized, the 60D has an SD slot instead of a CF one.

"Mother of all rebels" indeed...

being that i am 6'3 and shoot mostly in live view with my xsi, the swivel screen is a HUGE + in considering an upgrade. I wont have to be half bent over to shoot off a tripod, or in bracing against a tree/object.

price range +
better ISO range +
better fps +
Better MP+
Video +

Im actually stoked and cant wait for reviews. Not too sure what all the negative is on here just because it doesnt hit all the things you had imagined the past few months... get over it. 7D is out of my price range and 50D doesnt have video.. the 60D is perfect for me all around.

"Instead of" being key, not "in addition to."

i have the distinct impression that 90% of people that go on about weather sealing never make use of it. Its not like a drop of rain will hit the camera and it will die. The xxd range is only weather resistant anyway.

Personally i think the art. screen is a good idea for those over head type shots and low perspective shots. If you dont want to move it leave it in its default position. Ok it has an "ugly" hinge.... so?

being an xsi user, i have no complaints regarding 60d's shift to SD cards, in fact it's a plus if i decide to upgrade. but i just wonder, it would've been better if they made it to accept multiple cards. i know some manufacturers have already done this so it's possible. but i dont know how much more it's going to add to the price of 60d

Should the 60D actually be named in the xxxd lineup?

Ok so Canon comes out with this thing called the 7D which is what everyone in the xxd family was actually looking for in a camera. They then tell us that this new camera is not part of the xxD family but is in its own class.

So now we argue for quite a long time that the 7D really is a 60D and Canon is just bluffing that the xxD line is not finished.

However Canon really does come along with a new 60D and we think hmmm this is interesting, lets see what it offers. And it begins to look nothing like what we have been seeing in the xxD line as of before. In fact it almost looks like a downgrade.

So Now we have this 7D which is its own line and not to be confused with the xxD line. And now we have a new 60D which is not to be confused with xxxD line. So now Canons hierarchy of bodies are in this strange blob of confusion that shows the xxD line is still alive howbeit in its now zombiefied form. You look at it and think this thing should be dead but its not.

So I think I need to set Canon straight and tell them that the 7D really is a 60D and the 60D really is a 600D. The world of Canon can now rest peacefully and get back order with no mutated zombies of cameras trying to permeate our nice order of sequence:)

I think you should spend more time shooting than worrying what "class" a particular body is in. Personally I could not care less what class any of the bodies are in. Or where they fit in the line up. Simply pick the best tool for the job at hand that you can afford. And you are done.

600d or 60d, it's still gonna be the exact same camera isn't it?

Haven't you seen the threads? The cheap plastic bodies are soluble :) :)

It's not confusing, it's pretty straight forward and makes sense, at least for me. The way the xxxD and xxD lineup was before made no sense.

xxxxD = lowest cost
xxxD = small bodied consumer positioned camera
xxD = large bodied consumer positioned camera
5D/7D = enthusiast
1D = pro

The way it was before the the xxD and the xxxD were just too close in functionality to be able to call one consumer and the other enthusiast. They really were small bodied and large bodied. The distinction is much more clear now.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
