Tokina had a 10-17, though, so it is not like Canon invented the fisheye zoom, which is pretty much what they are saying.

The Tokina 10-17mm is a rebadged (and much better built) Pentax 10-17mm. This, in turn, is essentially a scaled down version of the older Pentax 17-28mm fisheye, which was a full frame diagonal fisheye zoom.
The new Canon one is a circular fisheye at one end and a diagonal fisheye at the other, on full frame anyway.

From the 8-15mm announcement:

The inner surface of the front element also features Canon’s SubWavelength Structure Coating (SWC), which uses tiny cone-like structures, shorter than the wavelength of visible light on the surface of the lens element, to gradually slow light down until it is at the same speed as it travels through glass, removing the risk of flare occurring before the light reaches the sensor.

Is this really possible? I thought the speed of light was constant. Maybe it's only constant when traveling in a vacuum (like outer space).

Well, OK, but Tokina = Pentax = Hoya

The speed of light is constant in any given medium. All that changes is what that speed is.

Thats what I'm thinking too. It sounds outrageous.

I'm really curious how this thing stands up, can't wait to see some charts on it.

I admit to being "stump dumb" when it comes to MTF Charts...

I know the the flatter the line stays accross the top the better, but beyond that, I got nuthin'... :(

Lets see... the vertical axis is essentially sharpness, closer to top is better. The horizontal axis is distance from center of the lens, 0 is center. The blue line is at f8, the black like is wide open. As for dotted vs solid it has something to do with the frequency of measurement or something... I don't really worry about it too much... lol

EDIT: as long as you compare it to another comparable chart, higher is better =)

That being the case, the MTF for the 400 MkII is just redonkulous...

this new 8-15mm fisheye looks real interesting. i think definitely the most innovative of the new releases. everything else is a revision of the older lenses at much higher prices.

not if you consider that tokina also released a fisheye zoom 3 years ago.

Have you seen the MTF chart on this? Owns everything out there. Who needs UWA when you can have this and just de-fish?!
