Those lenses are looking so sweet. I know thee sharpness that the 70-200mm II produces, what would the sharpness on these new glass be.
The MTF-charts are looking good, now see some real life tests.

I hope I am able to pick up a older 300 f2.8 now for a lot cheaper off of craigslist because it's no longer the best :)

The new lenses look...stunning... but being 18 and the new 300 f2.8 costing more than my car won't fly anytime soon..

The new 400 in some ways looks as if they re-engineered it into the 400 DO chassis...

It looks shorter in length and bigger in girth for some reason.

There sure is a lot of glass in the front of these two new beauties!! However, at the prices these are going to sell for, I'll have to settle with my 300 for a while and possibly pick up a 400 MK I somewhere down the road!!

The only difference I see is that the area where the lens hood screws into is now black (was white). There were probably complaints about chipped paint, I know my 300 is showing damage in that area, and it's relatively new.

But things are more expensive here the old one was about 12000$ :)

So for $3000,- extra you get IS Mode 3 and not only AF, MF but also PF? Wonder what IS Mode 3 and PF will be....

EDIT: oh right IS Mode 3: and a new third IS mode has been added, assisting users when quickly switching between subjects by activating the IS unit only during exposure.

And PF: A new Power Focus mode aids focusing during video shooting, allowing the photographer to smoothly adjust focus during filming by twisting the focus recall ring

Well, there's also that whole thing about increased sharpness, reduced weight, reduced MFD...

There are several threads around here so the info is getting scattered, but if you read the descriptions on sites liek dpreview you will find the definitions. Mode 3 only activates the stabilizers when actually taking a shot. PF is manual control of focus but using hte focus motor. Allows for smoother focus movements when shooting video.

Warehouseexpress in the UK are listing them as

New 300 at £7499 and old one at £3599.

New 400 at £11499 and old one at £6479.

Yeah right.

Now this did happen with the new 70-200 where they listed it at £2799 as soon as it was announced but by the time it was shipping it was down to something like £2499. It's currently at £1994.

So I'd expect these to drop quite a lot in price before they are released and to have about a £1500 premium over the current one for at least a year.

It's good to see the MFD is shortened on both lenses. As to the weight of the 400/2.8IIL, well the old one was Canon's heaviest lens. It was heavier than the 600L and 800L, so i think there was a lot of opportunity to cut some bulk. The 400mm f2.8 IS L was one of Canon's top performing lens. It's results with a 1.4x and 2x were amazing, but it certainly looks like this new lens has eclipsed the old one for IQ. The 300mm f2.8 IS L was again an excellent lens, but it's IQ did noticably drop with a 1.4tc and a more so with a 2x. If these MFT figures are to be belived then it looks like that is a thing of the past. It would be great to be able to use the 300L wide open with a 2X tc and still get L quality IQ out of it!

Any word on the new hood designs? Canon's site now lists the "II" version of the hood:

Lens Hood ET-155 (WII)

But the link is not active and there is only a thumbnail (that looks identical to the old one).
