Then it wouldn't weigh only 2.3 lb. :p

Yea, I guess they didn't feel like completely redesigning the old 70-300.

70-300 F4-5.6 +New glass, new AF, new body = 70-300 F4-5.6L

this lens does look intriguing. hopefully the price doesn't stay at $1500 though.

I find this one exciting and hope to see some reviews soon. Might be up next after my upcoming planned purchase of a wider prime --

Well this one IMHO is missing the point that SIGMA made about 5 years ago with it's f/4 EX 300mm zoom.
I'm sure it will be nice, but I'm still amazed Canon made yet another f/5.6 300mm zoom, what is this now, a good dozen or more over the years?

this is literally the L that no one has been asking for.

1500 is a bit ridiculous for this lens. OK it is a lot ridiculous.

Its much smaller than the 100-400, its USm, its weathersealed, if its sharp wide open I WILL be intrested in it, for $1k street or so.

The new Long-Stubby lens is more of a '100-400L Jr'.
I din like the 70-300IS nor 70-200F4 for various reasons.
This is so In-Between. I like it.
except its 1kg!

Agreed , I just can't see reason behind this , at least for me . I'll pass on the f/5.6 . Now if I lived somewhere where it was sunny all the time ......

I'm interested in this lens. I've held off on buying one of the 70-200s because I thought it would be nice to have more reach. And since I shoot mostly landscapes, the slow speed of this lens doesn't really bother me.

I'll be waiting to see how the IQ is.

I suppose I should not pass judgment so soon, but spec wise what does it have that the current 300mm f/5.6 zooms don't have. The DO for instance already has amazingly fast USM and top notch IS..

If it were f/4, you could shoot in lower light, and add the new 1.4x t-con :)
