I'm interested in this lens. I've held off on buying one of the 70-200s because I thought it would be nice to have more reach. And since I shoot mostly landscapes, the slow speed of this lens doesn't really bother me.

I'll be waiting to see how the IQ is.

My main interest is sports .

I'm sure it will be nice, but I'm still amazed Canon made yet another f/5.6 300mm zoom, what is this now, a good dozen or more over the years?

this is literally the L that no one has been asking for.

But it is the EF-S 55-250 upgrade that people have been asking for. The 70-200 series isn't going anywhere, and this provides an option for people that want a single telephoto upgrade. Ring USM, full-time manual, non-rotating front element, and (presumably) high-quality optics all the way to 300mm.

I'm really curious to see the focal lengths where the aperture changes. What if the aperture changes from 4 to 5.6 around 200mm? If the optics are good, then it's like a 70-200/4 with 100mm bonus at f/5.6...can't see anything bad about that.

For $1500.. This has FAIL written all over it. Looks like a sigma 70-200 OS overpriced disaster..part 2

I'd sooner buy a 70-200 f4 IS and a new 1.4x for $1500

but spec wise what does it have that the current 300mm f/5.5 zooms don;t have

White paint, a red ring, and a 4 digit price tag.

But you've just described the 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DO perfectly.
that's my only problem.

I suppose I should not pass judgment so soon, but spec wise what does it have that the current 300mm f/5.6 zooms don't have. The DO for instance already has amazingly fast USM and top notch IS..

Well, I'm assuming the IQ is better on this lens. If it's not, obviously that's a problem.

It's not actually going to sell for $1500.

The plain 70-300 IS weighs only 630g. The new 70-300L weighs a whopping 1050g. That's one heavy lens, and it could only mean the optics are going to be pretty good.

its like they took the 70-300mm 4-5.6 IS USM lens and slapped on a white barrel and called it an L.

yeah, i hope they have significantly improved the performance though - not like the 100/2.8 and 100/2.8 L IS.

I noticed that as well..they reversed it for some reason..being an L series..they must have some reason to do it.

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM lens

Compact and lightweight, yet durable and professionally sharp, the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM lens is the ideal telephoto zoom lens for advanced amateurs looking for that extra reach to bring a subject in tight and close. Providing the power and durability to maximize every shooting opportunity, the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM lens features two UD ultra-low dispersion glass elements for enhanced sharpness, L-series weather and dust sealing for shooting in harsh conditions, improved mechanical design, and streamlined ergonomics to help avoid inadvertent mode switch operation. The shapes of the lens elements and their coatings have been optimized to minimize ghosting and flare to produce high-contrast and high-resolution throughout the zoom range. A sophisticated floating system optical formula optimizes image quality at all distance settings and reduces minimum focusing distance by more than a foot. An updated optical image stabilization system compensates for camera shake up to an equivalent of four full shutter-speed steps, a full step improvement compared to earlier EF 70-300mm lenses. A new fluorine anti-smear coating is applied to the front and rear elements.

The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM lens is expected to be available toward the end of October for an approximate retail price of $1,500.

doesn't look all that bad in my opinion

EDIT:
I'd still rather have 70-200II with these new extenders ^_^
