Just in case anyone has not seen it, the price is now officially listed on the Canon USA web site as $1599:

http://usa.canon.com …_70_300mm_f_4_5_6l_is_usm (external link)

With the prices Canon has been releasing thier latest pro level lenses for, the cost advantage has been lost for choosing Canon over Nikon. I guess it shows how confident Canon is with the market share they have developed.

If you must know...

Phoned my local Henrys of Canada store. They are taking orders at $1,750 in Canada. ($1,500 in the U.S. $1,200 street)

This is in spite of the fact that the Canadian Loonie and American Greenback are at par and have been for awhile now. I wish someone would explain to me why we have to pay at least 10-20% more for the privilege of buying in our own country.

I know most european photographers pay more because there are VAT's that dramatically increase the prices and are not transparent (like sales taxes).

Does Canada apply either VAT's or import tariffs?

Keep an eye on this CND competitive price site, I bought my 50D & 60D watching this site

Right now of course the price just sucks...

I'm debating the 70-200 f4 IS and eventually the Extender EF 2x III...

There's a bit of embarrassment involved in case prices have to be lowered due to unsatisfactory sales or demand. In the era of job cuts and austerity measures; Canon seems to be enjoying their fortunes.

Well catastrophes do not recognize friends and relatives cos they don't have any. It engulfs everyone sooner or later. So, it's prudent to keep the nerves even in the face of abnormal occurrences.

Canon enjoyed good market share mainly due to their lenses. But now it seems a Nikon accountant found a lucrative job with Canon and is driving them nuts.:o

Frankly, if prices of same configuration bodies and lenses of both the brands are same; I buy Nikon. Becos, their bodies with larger sensors and fewer pixels produce better IQ and their noise management technology is better at present. They focus mainly on quality and requirement of photographers - not the gallery.

I hope you know with a 2x extender you will lose autofocus with the the 70-200 f4 on a 60d.

I've just picked my copy up from Park Cameras in the UK, £1399 inc vat so the price is already on the way down (I traded in my 20-200 F4LIS and 300 F4LIS and got a very nice deal as well, so I'm happy with the result).

No time to play yet as it was a 4 hr round trip and it was getting dark when I got back - handles well and feels good on the 7D though

The 70-300 L has now arrived to Sweden...

There must be a few copies around this forum by now and I am really curious to hear how this lens performs. How does it take TCs (Canon or 3rd party)?

I'm not planning to post any 100% crops here, because of all the "Yadayada" and the like. If anyone is interested I will link to my website where I shall be running a blog of my impressions and showing any images I like but I've got this lens for my use, not to feed the pixel-peepers and "Critics" that seem to roam these sites at the moment.

Its a shame, these people are making me and others like me less inclined to play the game

I agree with you oldcanon! For those of us who are NOT like that, I would really like the link to your website to follow your ideas on the lens.

Thanks,
Rafa.

Rafa, thanks for understanding, its http://imagesfromnature.foliopic.com (external link), as I said, have got a blog running on this + I've started a gallery (only one image so far). For some reason I can't access the site at the moment but hopefully it should be up and running again shortly (it was alright 5 minutes ago?)
edit - seems to be OK now
