FWIW, Rob Galbraith claims $1400 street price for the 8-15mm...

1400 for the fisheye? more than double the price of the old one?

unless you have a crop i don't see any way its worth it, plus you lose a stop...

I have a 70-200 f/4L IS would it be madness to consider trading it in for the new 70-300L? I was going to buy an extender for the 70-200 to take it to 98-280 f/5.6 but this woul give me 70-300 in one package.

Glad I went ahead and ordered the 100-400. Sure it's "old", but it's tried and true. The 70-300 may or may not be sharper (I hope it is) with the new IS, but 300 is still not 400. I'm looking to attend more air shows annually. The 400 will come in handy.

My 55-250 performed admirably... but unfortunately its weaknesses/limitations became very apparent.

Personally, I'm glad to see Canon keeping the prides of the fleet in top shape as well as offering some new twists along the way.

However, I don't feel like this release renders my 300 f/2.8 or 500 f/4 obsolete in any way. Still proud to both own and use them both!

Does not look like it, looks like a twist zoom, but I think the front will extend with zooming

NICE

So tell me, not wanting to be a complete OMG OMG but if they are announcing these now, before Photokina does that mean they will announce something else next month when it's on?

IIRC, Canon used to pull the trigger early like this before PMA as well (before they stopped attending PMA...)

Not saying there won't be something for Photokina, but I don't think there will be any more mind blowing bombshells.

They probably expect all of us ditching our current 300, 400, 500 and 600 lenses and running to get new ones for more then 2 times bigger price. This one is really one of smartest moves around.
But I have to say, that new 300/2.8 has something which non-is 300/2.8 had, and which all decent tele lenses have... except for current 300/2.8 IS. Carrying strap is finally attached to tripod collar again! I still don't know which idiot went to change this for 300/2.8 IS, when non-is 300/2.8 had this solved normal way already.

Nice lenses, but the 8-15 is the only one that really appeals to me (not that I can afford it). Now they need to focus on their standard zooms...
