For anyone that has shot with the 100-400 you can definitely attest to the fact that it is a fantastic lens.... the specs on the 70-300 just seem like a HUGE step down but without a giant step down in price. $1000 I can maybe see, but not $1400 Aaron

The MTF looks just as good, the IS is gonna be the new 4 stop IS which is amazing as we know. The USM is gonna be nice as well (just since it is newer). Will | WilliamLiuPhotography.com

Now, if the price of the new 70-300L is similar to the 100-400L that means one thing... they are gonna release a 100-400L II and discontinue the old one, lol. Yep Yep. (Primarily to be able to take it into areas with size/length limitations on lens). Now they announce the new 70-300mm at about $250 more than the Do version and at much better quality, just a tad longer. Sigh, another decision process coming up for me.

Do a little shopping around, i've seen the DO trade hands for $700-750...its not a particularly well loved lens Gear, New and Old! RAW Club Member

People who need this gear (pros) are not going to have a problem forking out the cash for them. So no, I don't believe so. Sans the 70-300, I don't see your point at all.
